HI! I am aware there is tax charged if you have an alcoholic drink before sailing. How far out do you have to be (after embarkation) before there is no tax charged directly? Thanks.

About 30 minutes from shore.

There is a chance that the amount of tax for a particular drink may be different depending on the state you are closest as well.

We noticed on a cruise from Boston to New Orleans that we were taxed 49 cents for the 16 oz. beers we ordered while still docked in Boston.

On the last night while we were close to New Orleans the amount of taxes for a mudslide frozen drink was $1.10.

I know the cost of the mudslide is higher than a beer but they are not twice the cost.

That has me thinking that the tax rate is higher for drinks sold in the waters close to Louisiana than the area near Massachusetts.

I seem to remember a thread a while back that talked about taxes for cruises out of Texas being taxed differently than say a sailing out of Florida.

Boarded in New Orleans at noon. There was a delay with restocking, so we didn’t leave until six. Then a six hour meander down the last of the Mississippi meant that we had twelve hours of the tax. 2 people drinking all day and night 22.25 in tax . Still not a deal breaker but more than the 0.82 quoted earlier . I think it was around 10% , just glad I wasn’t paying the full amount

International waters or about 12 miles from shore.

“International” waters has nothing to do with it. It’s a state issue, just like the on-board casino. Florida, for instance, has jurisdiction for three nautical miles from shore on the Atlantic side and nine on the Gulf coast.

United States waters extend 200 nautical miles from its shore, unless that reaches another country’s jurisdiction. As there is no Federal sales tax (yet), that has no effect on the price of your favorite cocktail.

So the answer about whether and how much sales tax is charged on your beverage depends on the location of your embarkation port. It’s minimal anyway, so I say “drink up”.

Cruised out of NY. Left port at 4PM. Had a drink at 6:30 PM. Charged 98 cents tax. Was told we weren't in international waters until after 8 PM.
