We did this in late December and it was very easy. We used Enterprise. Their office is not right at the port, but they will come and pick you up and take you back to their office. I believe Hertz has an office right at the port, but they do not have after hours drop-off, so that is why we choose Enterprise.

Be sure and tell them you are coming in for the day and that you will be in the OSJ port. We forgot to do that and they looked for us at the other port before realizing we were in OSJ. The other 'experience' we had with this was that there were not any taxis waiting when we dropped off our car. The office is located in the Condado Plaza Hilton hotel and at the time (and maybe still) the hotel was only housing hurricane relief workers, so no taxis. We ended up walking back to the port. It was a nice walk, but a little long. Someone said there were taxis in the other direction down Ashford Avenue, but we did not try.

It was a great day if you do not want to spend it in OSJ. We drove out to Luquillo Beach (the rain forest was closed) and it was super easy and super fun.
