TrojanJulez Posted February 4, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2018 Hello, I'm looking for recommendations for a kid-friendly hike/nature walk in Juneau that is within walking distance of the cruise docks. Here are my thoughts so far: It sounds like Nugget Falls at Mendenhall Glacier would be perfect, but the white shuttle/blue bus/Princess prices are all $40/$45 per person to get there. (I'm not willing to rent a car or get a taxi because both kids need a carseat/booster). Hiking up Mt. Roberts... how long would this take us? Is it too hard for a 4 and 8 year old? Is the starting point easy to find? Are there other options that I'm missing? Thank you!
mresera Posted February 4, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 4, 2018 I am in early stages of trip planning. I have 4/6 yo. I was thinking of doing cars/taxis with mifold/bubblebum seats. Not our normal boosters, but safe enough, hopefully?
CCJack Posted February 4, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 4, 2018 I would take the Mr. Roberts tram up. You can walk from the ship. At the top of the tram you exit into a gift shop area. Outside the building is where the trails start. It is a great hike and you can go as far up as you want then return and take the tram down. Fairly easy hikes, with great views. These trails go higher than the tram by quit a ways. I do not think you can skip the tram and hike starting from street level. I think it would be perfect for kids. I will post photo later. wolfie11 Posted February 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 4, 2018 You can hike up Mt Roberts but it is a steep climb. I would take the tram as suggested by CCJack. Lots of hiking and a restaurant for hot chocolate, etc. after the hike. There are also some good trails around Mendenhall including the walk to Nugget Falls. skrufy Posted February 4, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 4, 2018 Capital bus runs a schedule to Mendenhall from downtown ,stop is a short walk from the dock. The cost is $2.00 for adults and a $1.00 for kids, each way. The bus stop at Mendenhall is about a mile walk to the park visitor center. Google Capital bus, Juneau for info. CCJack Posted February 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted February 4, 2018 Here are a couple photos of the trails at the top of the Mt. Roberts tram, so you get an idea of what they are like.

TwinMamainMN Posted February 6, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 6, 2018 I've never heard of these - very interesting! We have BubbleBums for our kids to use when travelling. They are easily inflatable/deflatable and have a carrying cinch-type bag. We used them before in the Orlando area too. Just pack them in a carryon, pick up the rental car, inflate, attach the clips to the seatbelt, buckle up the kids and away you go. Easy!

centralcalicruzer Posted February 7, 2018 #12 Share Posted February 7, 2018 Great photos of Mt. Roberts - I've looked at the website before but it doesn't really show much of the trails, just the view from up there. Nice to have the perspective of what the trails look like!
