garf1108 Posted February 6, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 6, 2018 Hi I am looking at going on the Douro river cruise next year and just wanted to know which is the best time to go? Thanks
krillsister Posted February 6, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 6, 2018 We are going at the beginning of June. Most people enjoy the fall because of the harvesting of grapes. From what I understand the scenery is different each season. If I remember correctly we picked that time of year based upon the temperature. LondonTowner Posted February 6, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 6, 2018 I would think the best time is May/June or September/October. Sent from my iPad using Forums
garf1108 Posted February 6, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted February 6, 2018 Thanks. Is it warm, but not too hot in May/June/
Rare gnome12 Posted February 7, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 7, 2018 Doesn't it depend what YOUR comfortable temperatures are? Sent from my SM-N910C using Forums mobile app
garf1108 Posted February 7, 2018 Author #6 Share Posted February 7, 2018 As long as the temp. Is less than 35 Celsius, it should be OK.
Rare beanpittsburgh Posted February 7, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 7, 2018 Google the average temps for Portugal in each month. Use that for your decision on when to go. We sailed the Douro in Mid-October 2017 and had temps in the high 60's to low 50's at night. They had massive fires throughout the Douro 2 weeks before we went. You could still smell the smoke on our cruise. For the Pre-excursion in Madrid, temps reached 80 a couple of days. We packed for warm weather but took jackets and long pants too. We wore everything but the bathing suits for the sundeck pool. The weather of course is unpredictable. Pick a time and hope for the best.
cole Posted February 7, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 7, 2018 We did this cruise in April/May a couple of years ago and the weather was very comfortable. We are returning this coming October due to the harvesting of the grapes and expect the weather will be comfortable at that time also. It is a beautiful trip. Rare beanpittsburgh Posted February 7, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 7, 2018 Cole, Because of the hotter than normal weather in 2017, the vineyards harvested all their grapes in early September. When we went in October, the leaves were still on the vines so the vineyards looked fantastic but there was no one harvesting in the fields. We still had a great time! I just don't want you to get your hopes up - the weather is so unpredictable.
laverendrye Posted February 7, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 7, 2018 I went in early November a few years ago and the weather was fine. I think October would be ideal. Sent from my iPad using Forums
