Specialty Restaurant the first night out

I want to make a reservation at one of the specialty restaurants for the first night out as it's my husbands birthday. Apparently you can't. Does anyone know if this is true or do you have to call instead? Thanks in advance.

Since full suite passengers are entitled to dine for free at a specialty restaurant the first night of every cruise, the rest of us plebeians are limited to waiting until onboard to see if they will accommodate us there that night.

We always book specialty dining the first night. Yes, the suites get it free that night, but it's never been a problem for us to board and book that night for the time we want. We call as soon as the DINE line opens at noon.

They never seem to pick up before, so we don't bother. Sometimes we stop by the restaurant itself and if someone is there, we make our RSVP.

You should be fine to book upon boarding for your husband's birthday.

Oh and you cannot book the first night on line (ahead of time).

Yes, I tried online and saw you can't but will take your advice and try when we get on board. Thanks
