Old San Juan, New San Juan or both?

We will only be in San Juan for 6 or 7 hours during our upcoming cruise. It's our first time there. We would like to see the best it has to offer (sightseeing only, no time for beach) without rushing.

 

I understand OSJ can be done on foot from the port. We do have the option of going with a ship's excursion and visit both, probably by bus.

 

Would you recommend we stay in the Old San Juan area or try to see both old and new SJ?

We'll be there for the first time on 3/13. After doing a good bit of research we're decided to just wander around OSJ. We'll walk up along the wall to the San Juan Gate, check out the cathedral, stroll around and shop a bit. Maybe take the free trolley for a loop around town. Then we'll follow our noses and find something interesting to eat.

We did it on foot. The forts, wall, and other things are really reachable in 20 minutes.

Honestly, there's really not much to do in "New" San Juan. It's just a city. San Juan as a whole is the municipality where the city of San Juan is located. "Old" San Juan is simply the historic, original part of the city. It's full of history, old and sometimes amazing architecture (for those that are into that), great food and culture. The Condado area is full of condos and some hotels/resorts with some stores around (some very very expensive designer ones as well) but there's not really anything "must do" or "must see" in that area. Stick to "old" San Juan, soak it all in and enjoy!

Stay in Old san Juan. You'll have time to really explore one fort (we prefer Cristobal over the more famous El Morro). Then walk around the streets and enjoy the architecture and great street vibe. You can do all of this on your own
