Refurbished Ships Question

All ships go to drydock for inspection of the hull and any needed out-of-water maintenance every two and half to three and a half years, depending on the ship's age.

"Refurbishment" can mean general upgrades of soft furnishings and other cosmetic details, which are generally done on an ongoing basis beyond heavy items such as replacing carpet in public rooms which as you assume is done when the ship is out of service during a drydock (but contrary to popular belief is not the purpose of said drydock).

Island Princess underwent a very well publicized major refit in April-May 2015 adding more than 100 additional cabins but removing significant public areas and aft viewing decks. Since then there has also been a routine drydock (as described in paragraph one above) for 10 days in November 2017.

By regulation, ships much dry dock twice in every 5 year period with the exception that a newly launched ship can wait till the 5 year mark for the first dry dock. That is for engine work, etc. Refurbishment generally happens at the same time, but is at the discretion of the cruise line. Typically public areas are done during dry docks, cabins may or may not be. They will sometimes close off a section of cabins and refurb them during a cruise...usually off season.

You have the schedule above for your ship.
