Mosquitoes in May?

Mosquitoes don't breed in salt water or heavy brackish water, so on the coast they are much less of a problem than the interior. I've never seen a problem with mosquitoes in Southeast Alaska or even along the Central Alaska coast unless you get away from tidewater in mid summer.

Thanks for the info on Mozzies, but what about Blackflies, Deerflies and Horseflies (all of which their bites are 10x worse than mosquitoes.

We sailed two years ago in May and when in Icy Strait Point decided to walk to Hoonah. We were swarmed with what I guess you would call noseeums, and they were biting us constantly. Very annoying. We took the shuttle bus back rather than walk as we were tired of getting bitten. They did not bother us in the port area itself, and that is the only time we have encountered biting bugs in 5 Alaska cruises.

Yes, they are out in Juneau. I was out the road by the Shrine of St. Therese 2 nights ago and they were bothersome. Big too! It's been very wet here lately and that brought them out. Bring your bug dope!
