Venice City Stay

We did a 3 night Venice stay on our own pre-cruise. We stayed at the Hotel Olimpia and loved it. Great location right near the bus and train stations. Only one or two bridges to deal with when carrying your luggage in and out. Lots of very good local restaurants in the area and the staff is great. They even upgraded us to a suite just because.... Oh, since they are right by the bus station transportation to or from the ship is easy via the people mover.

If you fly into Marco Polo airport and stay at the Locanda Orseolo take the water taxi from the airport to the hotel. They will take you to the water window, a canalside opening into the hotel....an adventure in itself. Love the Locanda Orseolo....

A vote here for the hotel Antiche Figure, at the top of the Canal Grande opposite the Railway Station. And its sister hotel Canal Grande. And I absolutely endorse taking the water taxi from the airport to the hotel if at all possible: Antiche Figure arranged that for us, so I didn't have to wrestle with another website! It is the only way to arrive into Venice!

We just came back from the cruise and stayed in Hotel Olimpia - all I can say - fantastic on all aspects. 15 years ago we styed near St. Marco - will never do that again.

Actually, best to visit Venice is without luggage. Leave it at the airport locker room.

They've told us to ask them about this just before we leave as it all depends on the tides. Am guessing that I would be better off wearing trousers that day if we can use the water window ;)

Has anyone done the 3 night Venice City Stay through Celebrity? Just wondering what the feedback was.

We actually have done the Celebrity package once (though we've also done it "on or own" a few times)...

Celebrity put us at the Hotel Carlton Grand Canal--which was very nice and fairly convenient. It is directly across the Grand Canal from the RR Station and you can get the vaporetti (bus boats) near by...Celebrity had an agent who met us at the airport, helped retrieve our luggage, load it on the bus, and take it off the bus and to the hotel for us...The Carlton is a short walk from Piazzale Roma (where the bus, taxi and auto traffic terminate in Venice and from where the Peoplemover goes to the pier), so they led us on a walk to the hotel. We did it on that occasion because, at least at that time, the cost was only a slight premium above booking ourselves and it was nice to have them handle all of the logistics for us.

But, other than that, we have typically saved a bit of money booking our own hotels and ground transportation. If you do that, book a hotel near Piazzale Roma--for convenience. The least expensive--and actually one of the easier ways to get there from the airport is by public bus. They have a spacious airport bus with large luggage areas that makes few stops and only if necessary between the airport and P. Roma...And, once you've checked into a hotel and stashed your luggage, it's easy to get around Venice from there using the Vaporetti. You can buy a multi-day pass that actually includes the use of the airport bus.

Do NOT, as one prior poster suggested, leave your luggage at the airport--you'd only have to return to the airport to retrieve it before your cruise...and, if you stay near P. Roma, it's really not that hard to deal with it...

Good luck...

We did our own pre-cruise stay in Venice (2nd visit). So easy and more economical to organize yourself.

I strongly recommend that you stay as close to San Marco as possible, (rather than P Roma) to be truly immersed in the heart of Venice.

Eight of us stayed at Locanda San Barnba and were very pleased. They have their onw water taxi portal, or it is literally steps from the Ca Rezzonico water bus stop. It is a lovely small historic hotel with a garden and some rooms overlooking a canal.
