cruisetimeforme Posted August 3, 2018 #26 Share Posted August 3, 2018 Just returned from 2 weeks of cruising to Costa Maya and Cozumel twice each port also Key West, Grand Cayman, Roatan and Harvest Caye, Belize. As frequent cruisers in the Caribbean we were definitely surprised by the huge amounts of sea grass floating throughout our waters during our sailings back and forth to Miami. Really large patches of the stuff at the surface almost "fermenting" due to temperature of the water I suppose. It was really interesting to us as we live on a barrier Island and sure do hope that crap doesn't come pollute our beaches!

Just got back on 7/24/18. We were looking forward to Costa Maya, we were there 2-3 years ago and had a fantastic beach day. It was so gross and smelled horrible this time, we stayed 5 mins and went back to the ship (after we paid for it LOL). Cozumel was great, went to Chackanaubb (spelling) State Park and it was clean and beautiful.
BlueBear4Travel Posted August 6, 2018 #28 Share Posted August 6, 2018 Thank you all for your replies. So all we can do is hope for the best. Will the sea grass affect the snorkeling on the reef, too? I mean appart from the stuff floating around you, does it also stink and deter you from going into the water at all?
cruisegal415 Posted August 7, 2018 #29 Share Posted August 7, 2018 We’re at Maya Chan today. They told us before we got on the taxi that the sea grass wasn’t bad today and it isn’t. There is a slight smell that is unpleasant but the breeze is nice and helps. It isn’t so off-putting to cause us to regret coming. There is no way to know in advance how bad it will be until you get here. It can change on a dime. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
JRudy33 Posted August 24, 2018 #30 Share Posted August 24, 2018 Does anyone have any updates on the seaweed problem? I will be there the week of September 9th and was curious if it has improved.

lcookie Posted October 4, 2018 #33 Share Posted October 4, 2018 Was there this past Friday. I could see the seaweed floating in the water and accumulating on the shoreline around the port. We elected to hang out on the boat instead of risking it at the beaches. Sent from my SM-N960U using Forums mobile app
