New Orleans - best views and time to gulf?

Im looking at a cruise from NOLA, and am thinking about splurging on an aft balcony so I can see both sides heading to the gulf. Good choice or is port or starboard better?

Also how many hours will it take to reach the open sea?

If there are no delays going down River--you should reach the mouth of The Mississippi and the Gulf about midnight.

IMO there really isn't much to see. I did two cruises from NOLA when I lived there and depending on the time of year most of transit is in the dark. It takes about 8 hours to get to the Gulf.

We've done it twice. But it does get dark about halfway to the Gulf. Several hours down the river, lots of refineries. Looking at either side is pretty much the same. Interesting though.

The city is port side leaving though, which is the left looking forward?

If you can hang in there until you reach the mouth of the river, the oil rigs in the gulf look like a city! It is amazing just how many rigs are out there.
