Suggestions for what to do in Nice

We don't have any tours planned for our stop in Nice. What would be a good way for us to spend the day? I'm travelling with my husband and 2 teenaged daughters (14 & 17). We are not big shoppers. Is the beach worth checking out or is it very crowded? Appreciate any ideas...

Your port is actually Villefranche and its a tender port. Since you are on such a huge ship, unless you have priority it is going to take some time to get ashore. We would not normally recommend this port as a beach day as there are just lots of better options. So consider getting off as soon as possible (this means getting up early and being among the first to get a tender ticket). Once ashore we would suggest using either the regional bus #100 or the train (you can walk to the Villefranche train station) to get to nearby Nice. In the morning we would head directly for Nice's Old Town area where you can visit the famous outdoor Flower Market. Its fun, browsing is fascinating, and there is plenty of nearby places for a mid-morning cafe au lait or snack. You can later walk through the streets of the Old Town or stroll along the water towards the Promanade. Nice is nice :). Once you are tired of Nice you could take the train or bus over to Monte Carlo and enjoy that city. For smaller more quaint places there is Eze Village (located between Nice and Monte Carlo) or St Paul de Vence (more difficult to access on your own). And these are just a few simple ideas.

Getting back to Nice, it is a really nice city and also has some excellent museums (great for rainy days). And enjoying a nice lunch in France is generally fun for most families.

The reality is that there are lots of choices for this port. If you look at your cruise's excursions it might give you some ideas. If going on your own you have a decent train line (that spans the entire coast) or the local and regional buses. As to the beach in Nice, it has too many pebbles and rocks. Most Americans are appalled at what many Europeans consider decent beaches.
