misprint Posted June 19, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2018 Watching the World Cup there seems to be a lot of mosquitoes where England were playing. Is this something that we need to take into consideration in St Petersburg?
Sauer-kraut Posted June 19, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 19, 2018 Wasn't St Petersburg built on a swamp? Sorry I can't help you with your question but if you carry those little repellant towellets they won't weigh much.
Ultima Thule Posted June 19, 2018 #3 Share Posted June 19, 2018 England was playing at Volgograd and as I understand it the mosquitos you saw are a local Volgograd phenomena. Note that Volgograd (ex Stalingrad, ex Tsaitsyn) is further away from St. Petersburg than Rome is from London.

dogs4fun Posted June 19, 2018 #5 Share Posted June 19, 2018 Watching the World Cup there seems to be a lot of mosquitoes where England were playing. Is this something that we need to take into consideration in St Petersburg? Personally, I've never encountered mosquitoes within the city of St. Petersburg. I have encountered them in the countryside. BUT ... According to my Russian friends, the number of mosquitoes in St. Pete can be quite high during the summer months (especially around bodies of water which is practically everywhere in the city). These mosquitoes are malaria free. Just carry some repellent and you will be fine (those wipes look like they would do the trick).
anthonyy7 Posted June 20, 2018 #6 Share Posted June 20, 2018 The only place I noticed mosquitoes was the shaded gardens at the Peterhof. Otherwise there were none in the city. This was in early sept and leaves were starting to change color.
Sauer-kraut Posted June 20, 2018 #7 Share Posted June 20, 2018 Are any immunizations needed prior to Baltic cruise? I mean any shots other than those we get done regularly? No. Always good to keep your tetanus up to date.

DipBrat Posted June 21, 2018 #9 Share Posted June 21, 2018 Are any immunizations needed prior to Baltic cruise? I mean any shots other than those we get done regularly? If travelling in tick season and you like to be really cautious you could get Tick Borne Encephalitis. There are some ticks even in city parks but the risks seem very low for such a short city based visit. All vaccines have some risk themselves after all. Mosquitos really depend on the weather of course but certainly can be an issue especially at the palaces.
