We did all ours privately. We used this company primarily (you need to talk with them on the phone as they don't have their cruise tours posted on their website): http://www.southstartours.com .

 

Others have had good success with http://www.portcompass.com

 

In Puerto Montt we used this company: http://www.chile-travel.com/eureka.htm and had a private car and driver and an excellent tour which was much better (and cheaper for 3 of us) than we could have gotten through the ship using a big bus.

We used Port Compass for tours in Punta Arena, Puerto Montt, Ushuaia and Montevideo and were quite pleased. There were no more than 9 of us on any of the tours, which allowed us to customize then a little bit. In Argentina, we toured with DeFrantur tours - and again, were very happy with the tours and the service. Don't know if you go to Rio, but if so, we contacted Luiz Amaral -at travelrio - again, a good choice.

The only tour I might not do again was the Beagle Channel - although we did enjoy it. We really didn't have enough time to wander around the town.

We did the South America cruise January of 2005 (and loved it!!!) and did all the shore excursions privately excepting for Ushuaia.
