ATMs on the ships

I know that there really is no use for cash on the ships but what about the casino? Don't you need some kind of moneys to play the slots and tables with? I am sure they can't just charge it to your card. And for other things like untrustworthy atms at the Islands, I would rather get my money from the ship. How do I go about that?

you get the cash from your onboard account, and the casino charges 3% (i think) for the trouble.....

i have never seen an ATM, but there might be one....

you could also get travellers checks and cash them at the Purser's desk

you might do a "search" here for "ATMs and see what you learn

Would you believe there is an ATM in the casino, generally. I did not use it. I take travelers checks and cash them at the Pursers desk. No extra fee for this. As long as you don't ask for a lot at one time. I get about $200 at a time.

You can always take travelers checks and have them cashed for no charge in the casino or at the pursers desk. No problem. There is also an ATM with a high transaction fee, but there are two potential problems relying on it. First, it only gets filled up in port (it doesn't belong to Princess) so when it's out, it's out. Second, it only works if it can get a satellite connection to verify that you have funds, so if the satellite is out (no internet) then you're out of luck.

We ran into a strange situation on the Grand last month. One morning in port at Aruba, I intended to go to the casino and use the ATM machine. I needed cash and knew the casino cages were closed, but figured I could still use the ATM machine. For some reason the casino was roped off and no one could walk through. I stopped a crew member (not sure who she was or her position- only that she was wering a Princess name badge) and explained the situation. She suggested I walk off the ship and down to the street where I would find an ATM machine. I decided to verify this info with the purser's desk. While in line I was informed by a fellow passenger that any ATM I found out on the street would dispense "local" funds- in this case Aruban currency. At the purser's desk, I was able to obtain American currency with the 3% charge through my AMEX card. They warned me there might be an additional charge from AMEX, but that never occurred. My question is: why didn't the crew member I met walking around the ship just tell me to go to the purser's desk in the first place? This was only one example of the type of service we found on the Golden. Crew members seemed to do just what was asked of them- nothing more. They were glad to accommodate almost any request, but you had to ASK first- extra service or information was not forecoming.

We plan to do what Rob suggests. If you have AAA or a preferred account at some banks, there is no fee for traveler's checks. Take more than you think you will need with you. Since it is a bit of a pain to cash them anyway, we never end up using them all. I just deposit them back into my bank account at the end of the cruise.

On Princess, you can't just go to the cashier's cage and have it charged to your account? We just went on our first cruise, on RCCL, and three times instead of using the ATMs I just went to the cage, handed them my Sign-n-Sail Card (or Seapass, or whatever the heck they call it), and they gave me money and put it on my bill, no extra fee.

If Princess charges you 3%, that's $1.50 for every 50 bucks. That's BS.

It might be BS, but that's the story on Princess. We never paid a fee before on Celebrity or RCCL. Always got cash on our cruise card with no problem.
