tenmile Posted September 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted September 21, 2018 We will be sailing on Celebrity in March and staying at a hotel in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island pre-cruise. What is the best transportation to the port? If taxi, approximately how much does it cost, do we pay in HK cash only, and approximately what is the travel time from Wan Chai to the port? Thank you for any information you can provide.
Rare mking8288 Posted September 22, 2018 #2 Share Posted September 22, 2018 HK public transport, including taxi (metered fares) are to be paid in local currencies - HKD (exchange rate is about 7:75 to 1 USD) - credit card pmt is exception, if equipped but digital/mobile payment are popular, linked to local/China's banking system, no access to visitors & foreigners. Shortest route & easiest - without knowing where hotel in WC is located - is via red taxi, curbside to curbside - distance of 13 km to 16 km (Cross Harbour Tunnel is closest - East Tunnel is further & loop out to North Point direction) ... toll is charged to passengers, $10 HKD for each crossing. Taxi fares should run about $100 to $120 HKD depending on traffic & routes, higher with congested traffic - travel time varied from 20 to 40 minutes. Do not tell the driver where you are going until inside the taxi in case they refused, thinking you might be going to the airport (it's a longer run with higher fares) and check to see that the meter is running - always get the printed receipt & note the driver's ID displayed & license plate, in unlikely case of problems - call police at 999 or ask to be driven to nearest police station if driver tried to scam visitors. tenmile Posted September 24, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted September 24, 2018 Thank you for the helpful information. I think we will be staying at the Metropark Causeway Bay.
Sky shield Posted September 25, 2018 #4 Share Posted September 25, 2018 The Metropark Causeway Bay is actually in Tin Hau, one subway station from Causeway Bay. The distances of either the Cross Harbour Tunnel or the East Tunnel are about the same. Assuming that you will be going to the ship at about noon time, the traffic via the East Tunnel will usually be easier. I would think you should allow 30 minutes. If you stay there, I would encourage you to walk to Tai Hang (the other direction from the main road of Gloucester Road / King's Road and the subway station). Tai Hang is now where young chefs experiment with their new ventures, many interesting small restaurants. Just a 10 minute easy walk from your hotel.
