Sailnsurf Posted October 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 17, 2018 I am new to CC and posted this enquiry just before the close down to re-design CC Forums etc. and cannot find my earlier post or any replies so here goes again. I was diagnosed as a Celiac a few years ago and have done one HAL cruise since my diagnosis so through that and reading many posts on gluten free I am reasonably informed on HAL options generally. But I have found little advice on what gluten free options are available at the Grand Dutch Café and Tamarind on the Koningsdam. I am using the Koningsdam as a guide as we are booked on a cruise to Norway on the Nieuw Statendam (to be commissioned later this year) and I assume it will be able to offer the same as the Koningsdam. Any advice would be welcomed.
Nashna Posted October 17, 2018 #2 Share Posted October 17, 2018 We are sailing on the Koningsdam in January. My husband also has Celiac disease and I'm sure we will dine in both during our cruise. I'll be sure to post after we return.
grsnovi Posted October 17, 2018 #3 Share Posted October 17, 2018 My wife is not Celiac however she can tell when she has been "glutened" and has severely restricted her diet over the last five years. We sailed on K'dam in June and we ate primarily in the MDR however we both love Tamarind and also ate there this last cruise with no issues. Our server was very attentive and asked questions and made suggestions regarding which dishes could be prepared GF. I don't think you'll have any problem as long as you explicitly tell your server that you are Celiac and you exercise the usual skepticism that you probably do when you eat someplace new. Sailnsurf Posted October 18, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted October 18, 2018 Thanks Gary, Cynthia and Nashna for your replies. Nashna, I would really like to hear of your experiences after your cruise in January. We are sailing with another couple and I would like to avoid any awkwardness which might arise by suggesting or agreeing to a venue only to find that there are no suitable gluten free options available. I expect no difficulty is likely at the Tamarind but the Grand Dutch Café may be another story - I know raw herring will be fine but not sure that's what I might want with a mid-morning or afternoon coffee!! In the meantime I am sure there must be someone out there who has cruised on the Koningsdam who is gluten free and can help.
