One of us is  photographer and likes being able to wander on foot without an itinerary.  Can Trinidad be enjoyed that way? - or is it better to have a guide to get around?

With a private guide you will get around more efficiently.  You will also get so much more interacting with the local people vs. just going around yourself and not get scammed by local hustlers.  With a guide who is also a photographer he/she will bring you to the best spots for photography. If you are going to Trinidad look into getting Gio's services. See the thread I started cataloging the private guides available in Cienfuegos .  I would NOT go with Gio for Cienfuegos tours since he is located in Trinidad and thus his tour price is high.  https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2593423-private-excursion-findings-cienfuegos-trinidad-cuba/

A million thanks for this - we'll see if Gio is available the day we're there.

Oh, Bay Area - we just moved away from there.  We were in Pleasanton.  Shedding tears over the fires and smoke, and so sorry for everyone affected.
