None, Carnival calls these Cruise Elegant evenings to allow those who wear cargo shorts, t-shirts and flip flops feel comfortable.

From the Carnival website you will have two:

"Cruise Elegant' evening is the second or third evening prior to the end of the cruise, itinerary schedule permitting.

  • 2-day to 5-day cruise: one Cruise Elegant evening
  • 6-day or longer cruise: two Cruise Elegant evenings"

Not on any ship I have sailed. Most people are respectful of the dress code. We saw the Maitre'd turn away gentleman in shorts. You do not need a jacket and tie, slacks and a nice shirt is adequate.

I don’t think people go to the extremes the OP mentioned, but I have seen people wearing jeans in the MDR on elegant nights on every Carnival cruise (23...number 24 starts in 2 days) I have been on, which is against Carnival’s elegant night dress code.

Only been on eight cruises, but have seen jeans worn on elegant/formal night on almost every one...and definitely every Carnival cruise. Youll see everything from tuxedos to Levis. The ladies can be seen in some very classy dresses. One cruise we noticed a middle-aged man who ALWAYS wore denin overalls...even on elegant night in the MDR. He always seemed to be enjoying himself. :)
