Santos to São Paulo - how long and how easy is it?

I have heard it usually takes one to one and a  half  hours each way. There can be very heavy traffic going to the port at Santos from Sao Paulo.

If you decide to stay in Santos which is a fair size city, there are various options.

We took the funicular up Monte Serrat for a good view of Santos and then took a regular bus around town down to the beach where there is a very wide promenade with a bike lane you can walk along for miles. We found the locals very friendly and helpful although none spoke English or Spanish.

We saw several trolley stops but no trolleys and the police we talked to said they were not running, not sure why.

Watch the cab drivers at the port - try to get a metered cab or prepare to be grossly overcharged. There are supposed to be vans that go to local shopping malls but we did not see any the day we were there.

Thanks - looks like we'll do the ship's tour to SP!
