Expat Cruise Posted February 6, 2019 #1 Share Posted February 6, 2019 The Caribbean is not as safe as many would like people to believe. With so many locals and low incomes it is a set up for crime. Cruise passengers and tourist in general should keep this in mind. From the news report: "The investigation into the matter has found that at about 11 a.m. on February 1, the couple who arrived in Antigua on the MSC cruise ship, was sightseeing nearby a tower in Hatton when they were attacked and robbed by two men. The attackers allegedly wrestled a black leather handbag from the 62-year-old woman and stabbed her 70-year-old companion in the abdomen, close to his navel, before running off." JT1962 Posted February 8, 2019 #2 Share Posted February 8, 2019 I would say it is still as safe or safer than many US Cities. If you use common sense, don’t flash cash, jewelry and electronics, stay in groups, don’t wander down side streets, etc., most Caribbean ports are relatively safe. Incidents do occur, but it is not something that I would let stop me from enjoying a vacation there.
sofietucker Posted February 9, 2019 #3 Share Posted February 9, 2019 And just prior, a cruise couple was attacked with a weapon and robbed in a church... We had found it to be a friendly port even once you got out of th tourist fake shopping area into the real town. Took a local bus for 1.50 each way to Valley Church beach and back, friendly folks on the bus. We were so glad to stop in that port as they were hard hit by the hurricanes... A real shame.
