Tipping on Norway Tours

Recommended Posts

Hello,

What is the expectation for tipping guides and bus drivers on tours run by the cruise ship company? Specifically in Skjolden and Eidfjord? I know the currency is kroner. I hadn't planned on exchanging money, assuming I could use my credit card, but I know tips are different.

Can anyone please share their experiences and knowledge?

Thanks.

Tipping is not really the culture in Norway, and most people only tip a small amount at restaurants. However, since cruise tours are typically not Norwegian clientele, tipping isn’t uncommon. Many people tip in EUR, GBP, or USD, so presumably the guides get enough tips to warrant the hassle of the currency exchange.

Additionally, much of the tourism industry employs seasonal foreign workers, who may use a different currency at home and consider tips more normal.

In general, I would simply say that tips are appreciated but not expected. While kroner would probably be far more convenient if possible, if you can’t use NOK, stick to EUR, GBP, or USD, and use notes only (coins are extremely difficult to convert).
