Need Lots! of Glory Advice

Recommended Posts

Have just booked 2 cabins on the Carnival Glory for June 5th - 12th - the Western "exotic" Caribbean. This will be our 15th cruise: 6 on Holland America, 4 Celebrity, 3 Princess and 1 NCL. What should I expect?

Would like any and all advice about typical "Glory" clothing. We know what to wear on the other lines, but understand that Carnival is more casual. Should the husbands leave the tuxedos home? Are long dresses for the 2 formal nights overdoing it? Would cocktail dresses/pants be more appropriate?

Any tips on the ship itself? Favorite things, must dos, don't miss, stay away froms, etc.

How's the entertainment?

How's the food?

Any favorite excursions?

We're in 8A balcony cabins 6264 and 6266 - Does anybody have any knowledge of or pictures of these cabins?

Any advice on the specialty restaurants? Are they as good as other lines?

Embarkation or Debarkation advice?

Told you I needed to know!

Can't wait to sail and experience Carnival.

I would bring the same as for any cruise. I wear my long formal as do many others. It is a mixed bag you will see everything. My experience has been that most everyone dresses for formal night.

Loved the shows on this ship! You can tell they put alot of time and money into thier productions.

We felt the service was some of the best we have had, the staff was very efficient and friendly.

Hubby did well in the casino, as well as some of our friends. So you know that gets a thumbs up!! icon_wink.gif

We liked the ship so much we are going back in three weeks and bringing my whole family!

Oh yes! The Emerald supper club was wonderful. Only 25.00pp and well worth it. Dinner lasted about 3 hours and was fantastic! There is music, great food and spectacular service!!!

Embarkation get to the port early... we like to arrive around 11:00. you can beat some of the crowds by arriving early. Carnival has FunnPass online pre registering it helps speed things up for checking in.

Debarkation if you can carry all of your own bags you can get off the ship about 8:30am before everyone else. If not they call you down by decks. Just head down when they call your deck, it's not too bad IMO.

We have done (in order) Disney, RCI, Holland AMerica and Carnival (3/27/04)

I think the thing I noticed most was how loud this ship was--music blaring everywhere. Dont even think about a nice quiet evening on the upper decks.

The other is service--you know those nice touches when your waiter and room stewart knows your name? Didn't happen on Carnival.

I have one cabin issue on another line, and the problem was taken care of immediately with the pursor's desk appologizing all over themselves that we had any kind of problem with our room. NOT on Carnival. They never did get the A/C fixed in our cabin, and I had numerous calls and trips to the front desk with this one issue.

I did think the Carnival formal nights would be more laid back--they really were about the same as the other lines listed.

There will be groups of drunken partiers--something we did not contend with on other lines.

The Glory seemed to be crowded most everywhere. I think this was due to a lack of good traffic flow in it's layout.

What I was pleasantly surprised with was the food quality, the much toned down Vegas type glitz in the decorating, (except for the changing colored lights in the dining room--blue food is not appetizing!) and the ports of call were great.

Hope this helps,

Punkie

That said, I was nocely surprised with toned down appearance of the Glory

Macy,

I don't know which cruise Punkie was on, but we never saw crowds anywhere or drunken partiers (unless may it was us)! Here's our review from our Feb 28th cruise on the Glory. HAVE A WONDERFUL CRUISE!

CRUISEDOGS

Cool Cruiser

posted 03-07-04 04:50 PM

Flew into Orlando on Friday and rented a car from Avis. The drive from Orlando to Cape Canaveral is easy and only takes about 45 minutes. We stayed at the Radisson Resort at Port Canaveral and it was nice. After check in we drove to Cocoa Beach to check it out which is only a few minutes down the road. There are a lot of nice hotels to choose from in that area and we'll probably stay there next time. There was a Beach Boys concert that night so you can imagine the tons of people! Went back to the hotel and met a group in the bar who were also going on The Glory and the party was on!

Saturday morning we took the car to Avis and met up with some of our Cruise Critic friends. We all wore Mardi Gras beads to identify each other. We were all standing outside waiting for the shuttle bus and spotted the beads easily - what a great way to start your cruise!

We did the FUN PASS on line and that's the way to go. From the time we stepped out of the shuttle bus it was less then 30 minutes and we were on the ship! The lines were moving very fast and they really have their act together at Port Canaveral (unlike Miami which can be insane at times). We were on the ship and having our first FOO FOO drink before noon and in the cabin by 12:30. We booked a balcony room at the back of ship on Veranda Deck. Great room - huge balcony, fridge in the room, fat cushy bed pillows, ice cold A/C, and very clean. Excellent room stewardess and assistants.

Started our tour of the ship - it's beautiful! We've been on almost all of the Carnival ships and the deco has been toned down from the flashy Vegas style.

Met our Cruise Critic group at the Azure Bar for sail away drinks after the boat drill. By the way, the boat drill was over very quickly and the life vests are not the gross big stinky ones they normally have!

Luggage took a little longer to arrive than normal but we were having too much fun to really care. It finally arrived about 5:00 pm just in time to unpack before dinner at 8:00 in the Platnium Dining Room.

The food on board was excellent and so was our dining staff! Lots of seafood cooked perfectly. Don't miss the chataubrand (excuse the spelling?). Food in the Red Sail was great also. The lines were never long and the food selection was enough to satisfy anyone's taste. The fish and chips station (upstairs in the Red Sail) also has oysters and calamari! On our last sea day, there was a Chocolate Buffet during the day - NOT TO BE MISSED! We always did room service for breakfast and they were very quick getting your food to you.

Didn't see all the shows, but the ones we did see were very good. The "illusionist" is not to be missed - starts out kinda slow but he was incredible! The R-rated adult comedy shows at midnight were hysterical! Also, the Motown singer is great.

Casino - WHAT A BUST! I should have just given my money as I entered, but that's just my luck. Large casino and no problem with smoke! Lots of slot machines and blackjack tables available.

All the bars and lounges are nice and decorated beautifully. Good and strong drinks everywhere. The best bar is the Martini Bar just outside the disco. See Lenka and she will make you a killer martini! The ship seems to have good ventilation at all the bars and it handles the smoke easily. I'm a smoker and my husband is sensitive to smoke and he never had a problem anywhere on the ship.

The disco is big and the DJ will play just about anything you want to here. Special country western, disco, Motown, and latin music times - check the Carnival Capers for times.

Ports:

Key West is always fun. There were absolutely no lines to get off the ship and into town like some people have said. We were off the ship and in the middle of town within 15 minutes.

Belize - Went there last year and hated it! Changed our minds. Took the tender (15 boat ride) and went to the shopping area at the pier. The shopping area has been enlarged and has a lot more security than last year. We decided to walk to the Radisson Hotel and have lunch and a drink. Great place to spend the afternoon. Bartender at the Tiki Bar is Mel and he's great! Food was good and hotel is nice and clean. Prices are in Belizian dollars and are reasonable. Talked to some people that went on the excursions and they were pleased.

Cozumel - FUN - FUN - FUN!!!! Lots of taxis and easy to get to town (just don't look at the spedometer). Cab fare is $6 per taxi each way. Lots of great shopping and restaurants downtown. Ate lunch at Los Palmaras - great food and service (AND MARGARITTAS). Also heard the excursions were great in Cozumel, especially the beach and snorkeling ones.

Progresso - MORE FUN!!! Some people did not like this port, but it's all what you make of it! It's a real Mexician beach town and the locals were very friendly and helpful. The pier is 5 miles long and you have to take a shuttle, but not a problem - lots of buses and no waiting. They drop you in the middile of town at the Mexican craft market. Great shopping and cheap prices for silver, T-shirts, and craft items. They also offer tours to Merida cheaper than the ship and they will take you directly to the ship on the way back. Lots of people did this but didn't talk to anyone that did this. A fun beach day and good Tequila and beer at the bars - check out the one across from the beach with the thatched roof. Good drinks and most importantly - clean bathrooms!

Last day at sea was a little rocky but not bad. If you do need motion sickness meds, just go to the Purser's Office and they give it to you free.

Overall - the ship was beautiful and very clean. The staff was great and they all seemed to get along (unlike on some other ships we'ver been on).

Debarkation was almost TOO easy. We had breakfast on Lido Deck and by the time we got back to the room at 8:30 they had called our deck color. We were off the ship, through customs, and on the bus by 9:15 - unbelivable! If you wanted to carry your own luggage off, you could get off the ship by 8:00 am. At the airport by 10:15 am and our flight didn't leave until 3:15. Got lucky and got on an early direct Air Tran flight at 11:30 and were home in Virginia by lunch!

This week will really be BAD - cooking our own meals and making our bed

Hey Glory Party Pirates...where are we meeting for drinks before dinner! Miss you guys!

CRUISDOGS - Sad to be home and ready to go again!

cruisedogs2 - thank you so much for that excellent review of the Glory! I needed all of that info and printed it for further review.

I have reserved two rooms at the Raddisson at the Port, but I'm wondering what hotels in the area are maybe newer, oceanfront, convenient and also lively. We'll be arriving there at 11:00a.m. and will be looking for some fun things to do. Any suggestions on that?

I heard that Grills is a good place to hang out. They do have Derek and the Slammers playing on Friday night. That sounds like fun.

Was the platinum dining room in the middle of the ship or aft?

Thanks again! Killer review.

Anybody else want to advise me? I swear I'm listening to everything!

I would suggest looking into the Marriott Courtyard in Cocoa Beach. It is approx. three to four miles from the port. A much nicer hotel than the Radisson. I have stayed at the Radisson twice and found the rooms to be dumpy. Both times I was in the older section of the hotel. At the Courtyard, I was able to get a oceanfront room with a nice balcony. It was great watching the ships sail in and out of port.

As far as the Glory, it will be different than anything you have experienced with the other lines that you listed but that is why we like to try other lines. icon_smile.gif

I won't give the low down on the ship as others have already done that but I will say that Carnival has been given a false reputation of drunks all over the ship and I have to say that in fifteen cruises on Carnival that I have never seen that type of situation. One or two but nothing different than any other cruise line that I have sailed. Also, the lights in the dining room are a subtle neon backlight that I thought looked great but everyone is different. I have some photos in my webshots if you would like to look at the dining rooms and the rest of the ship for yourself. Have a great cruise.

We just returned from a cruise on the Glory. This was our first cruise, so I have nothing to compare, but I can give you my opinions and experiences.

We sailed 4/3/04-4/10/04 Eastern Caribbean itinerary.

Dining room attire: Tuxedos are fine; we saw several men wearing them. There were also several men, my husband included, who wore dark suits and ties. I don't recall seeing any attire that I thought was "too casual". The majority of passengers dressed very well, especially on the two formal nights: Sunday and Thursday. I wore long dresses on the formal nights and "resort casual" the other nights.

Entertainment: Loved the magic show, Justin Illusion. Didn't see the Rock on Broadway show but heard it was very good. Can't remember the name of the other show we saw, and it was also very entertaining. All these shows were in the Amber Palace. We attended two of the art auctions and found those to be informative and entertaining. I would recommend attending the captain's cocktail party if you can. Free drinks and you get to meet your fellow passengers and some members of the crew. If you get the chance to attend any event hosted by Ronoldo, do it! He is great. He gave a salsa dancing lesson that was so much fun! It was recorded and shown on Fun Vision on the cabin TVs so we got to watch ourselves over and over. We also enjoyed Mark Price, the CD.

Food: The buffets in the Red Sail on Lido deck (there are several) were "ok". There were a few items in the buffet that were very yummy (ribs, baked chicken, salad bar, mashed potatoes with Brie, the chocolate buffet on Friday night) and the rest was so-so. I didn't care for any of the eggs served for breakfast. I tried them all: scrambled, over easy, omelette, all yucky. I much preferred ordering breakfast from Room Service (or Ruin Sore Bees! hehe!) Each afternoon I'd put out the Room Service door hanger. It's true you can't order a full hot breakfast this way but I found the danish, yogurt, fruit, juice and coffee to be just the ticket for me. And we had a category 11 suite with a balcony. Nothing beats having your breakfast and coffee on the balcony while watching the sunrise. Dining room food was GREAT! We were at table 110, Golden Dining Room, 8:30 seating. We didn't think we'd enjoy getting dressed up and eating "fancy food" but we ate there every night. The food was fanastic! Ok, one exception: the tiramasu...yuck! I love tiramasu and this was truly awful. Our Dining Service Team led by Jorge were also fantastic. By the 2nd night Jorge knew all our names along with our likes and dislikes. There were 8 of us at our table; no small feat when you consider we weren't the only table he served. The grill (hot dogs and hamburgers and fries) was a big hit and very good. The deli had really good sandwiches. Didn't get a chance to try the Oriental food. Don't like sushi so didn't go near that (it's on Deck 5 by Creams). Creams had chocolate covered strawberries, cheesecake, cookies and such, all at an additional fee. My daughter raved about the hot chocolate at the 24 hour beverage stations in the Red Sail (but don't order this from room service; it's awful). Pizza was great too and available 24/7 along with ice cream and frozen yogurt. I heard the fish and chips were to die for; didn't try them myself.

Excursions: Didn't book any thru Carnival. Although one person in our party did and she really liked the convenience of FunVision (using the TV in your cabin to book excursions, check on your sail/sign acct, etc..). We booked island tours from the numerous vendors waiting for you on the dock. I highly recommend using Luti if you want an tour of St. Maarten; he was so nice!

Layout of Ship: That took some getting used to. I found it very difficult to find my way around. Thank goodness my 14 yr old daughter was with us...before the end of the first day she had that ship memorized from bow to stern! Best tip for getting around: remember that Deck 5 Promenade is the only one that spans the entire length of the ship and from this deck, you can get anywhere.

Embark/Debarkation: Embarking was a breeze. Two members of our party qualified for Skippers Club ("perk" of booking category 11) and the rest had the usual embarkation process, and all of us had registered with Fun Pass. We were all done with embarkation at the same time, got our sail/sign cards and boarded at the same time so I can't say that Skipper's Club and/or Fun Pass had any posiative or negative effect on the whole process. Debarkation is another matter and this is my biggest complaint. If you can carry off you luggage yourself, I would strongly recomment doing so because these passengers are among the first allowed off the ship; at 7:30 am. We had a ton of luggage and could not have easily/safely carried them ourselves. Debarking through the Port Canaveral Terminal involves using escalators and could be hazarous if you have lots of luggage. Those passengers with an "early flight" (1 PM or earlier) were allowed off at 7:30 am. Our flight was at 1:10pm....10 minutes too late to be considered an early flight. In addition, the pursor's desk would not allow all members of our party to have the same color luggage tags (the color of the tags determine when you're allowed to leave the ship and when your luggage is processed), even tho we all were on the same deck and our cabins were very close to each other. This resulted in my husband and I getting called to debark much earlier than our daughters. At the bottom of the gangway you go thru customs. You're allowed to fill out one customs form for the entire family but then the entire family should also debark at the same time. One customs agent asked why we didn't have our daughters with us and we explained that Carnival wouldn't allow it. Because we had to wait for our daughters and their luggage, we barely made our flight. We would have missed it if not for a very nice TSA agent at the security checkpoint. Some of our luggage didn't make the flight and didn't catch up with us till 6 hours later on a different flight. None of it was lost, so we have that to be thankful for.

Pictures: Have lots of pictures taken. You don't have to buy any if you don't like them. Nice backgrounds and the photographers were all very knowledgable on how to pose you so that you looked your best. Altho our welcome aboard photo that's taken at embarkation was awful only because we looked terrible after traveling all day. You could have pictures printed on a canvas that can be stretched and framed when you get home. We got a 16 x 20 of our family for $75.

Partying: Never saw or heard any hard partying adults. But the kids, little kids, were another story. No problems that we saw with teenagers. Yes, there were lots of kids because this was the week before Easter, we expected that. But didn't expect so many young kids, under 10, to be running up and down the hallways screaming, yelling and purposely spilling food/drinks on the room service trays left outside cabin doors for housekeeping to pick up. Speaking of noise, be aware that the walls are paper-thin and you can easily hear your neighbors. And they can hear you icon_smile.gif

Well, there you have it. All in all, we enjoyed cruising and Carnival very much and are already planning our next one. If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me.

1. The supper club is tremendous. Try the lobster and the flourless chocolate cake.

2. The clothing is a casual during the day. Short/Tshirts. Make sure to take 2 bathing suits. Dress for formal night is suit coat and tie for a man is acceptable. A nice dress for the ladies. Rest of the nights was a nice pair of pants and a collared shirt for my husband.

You will love the Glory it is a wise choice

We were on the Glory Western Caribbean a few weeks ago. Like you we have been on many lines: Celebrity, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Rennasaince and even Chandris (which became Celebrity). We enjoyed the Glory, but felt that it was a little big. In response to your questions:

Clothing: Tuxedos and long formals on formal nights are fine. The other nights are all designated as casual so you do not need "semi-formal" clothes as on many other ships. Shorts, capris, etc,. are appropriate during the day. Be sure to bring something in case you find the ship too cold.

Tips: Arrive 5 minutes late for dinner if you are in the Platnium dining room. The lobby outside the dining room is too small so it becomes hot and over crowded with people waiting for the doors to open. Don't forget your sunblock and a hat!

Entertainment: The revues were the best we have seen on any ship; however I did not think the deck or bar music was as good as usual. I especially missed not having a calypso band on the pool deck.

Food: We thought it ranged from excellent to poor. The beef and shrimp dishes and Ceasar salad were generally very good and the souffles (chocolate and Grand Marnier) were excellent. However, main courses tended to be just warm at best and the salad dressings were uninspired. Breakfast was good both on deck and in the dinng room except for the toast which was always cold. Lunch on the Lido deck varied. The grill and pizza were quite good. In fact, the hamburgers and cheeseburgers were the best we have had on any ship: overdone of course , but freshly made so they weren't dries out and didn't taste like hockey pucks. The chocolate buffet at lunch was impressive, but I thought it was way too much for the middle of the day.

Excursions: We hire private transportation instead of going on ship excursions because my husband is disabled (its also usually cheaper). We went to Altun Ha in Belize. It was okay, but I think snorkeling or cave tubing would be a better choice. We went to Dzibilchaltun in Progresso which we enjoyed a lot more. One note, I went into Progresso after we returned to the ship. There was very little there and a LONG line for the buses to return to the ship.

We did not try the specialty restaurants.

Embarkation/Disembarkation: A shuttle is the best way to get to the pier. According to the Radisson, the gates for the Glory do not open until 11:30 so arriving earlier just means you sit in the line of cars waiting to get in. Then cars waiting to get in the parking lot cause a major back until about 1 PM. After that getiing onto the pier is easy. You still have to wait in line, but by taking a shuttle or waiting until 1:00, you miss much of the madhouse. There were also long lines to get through immigration at disembarkation in spite of the fact that they call you by section. We also had an additional 20 minute wait for our luggage because they had not gotten all the luggage for our section on the carousel. However, everything was much calmer than usual once we got out of the terminal.

Other: In general, the service was very good. Dining room service tends to be quicker and not as formal as on other cruise lines, but it was still very ggod. The dining room shows were fun, but seemed repetitive by the end of the week.

Lines were not too big a problem except in port (and at the grill just after everyone returned). I mentioned Progresso above. In addition, the line to get onto a trolley in Key West was very long. The tender line in Belize was about normal.

We thought the Casino was okay except for the fact that it had insufficient ventillation so it was filled with smoke everynight.

The captain's party was different. It was held in the several bars instead of the show lounge. As a result, I thought it was sort of chaotic.

Unlike some of the other posters, we did not have a problem with drunks and even though it was a vaction week we thought that the children/teens were reasonably well behaved.

I hope this helps.

Dale

Wow - this has been a terrific thread!!!!! You guys have been a fabulous source of information and I really do appreciate the info. I'm sure that there are lots of potential Glory cruisers that are thinking the same thing.

I feel like I know a lot more than I did.

If any of you think of more, please spill all!!!!!

Pkarst and Rebel - I may change to the Ron Jon on your advice.

Does anyone have comments on the shuttle services to the port. I was thinking about Arts since we're arriving on Friday instead of the day of embarkation.

Thanks again!!!!!

Macy
