Concierge and when to tip?

I find your candor refreshing -- and I relish your perspective as one who mans the front desk from time to time.

Thank you.  I wish more people could spend time behind the Front Desk to gain some insight into what really goes on.  Tonight - people thought they had connecting rooms for them and their children - someone messed up.   Searched all our rooms and found a suite that I could put them into that would fit all 5 of them.  No extra charge for the trouble since someone blew it on our end.  Got $6 for helping them to the room with a luggage cart that had probably 250lbs of bags as the bellmen were all out driving shuttles (but this old lady pushed and pulled that cart!!!).  More money for the party fund...

And, I always try to NEVER be the guests that I see at the hotel!  It takes a lot for me to complain now 😉

My perspective is also from having worked plenty of front desk jobs earlier in life.  I would never say no to a tip but it was never expected when I was just doing my job (which would also include fixing mistakes other people made, which is a routine part of the gig).

I would actually take umbrage with some "big tippers" who were expecting you to treat them better than everyone else.  I guess I'm an egalitarian at the end of the day.

I'm in a non-tipping position.  And I do not expect to be tipped for anything I do.  But, if someone offers a gratuity for something I did for them, I'll graciously accept it, thank them, and put the money in the jar.   I'm with you on the "big tippers" if they tip for the first thing.  Money can't buy me.  I WILL give some special attention to those I want to help - the military family on a one-night getaway before a deployment, a mom treating her special needs boy to a ski weekend, a family whose mother suddenly passed away but the father still wants to take the kids on a vacation.  Now, those who leave the $500 to split between the Front Desk staff when they check out...
