JeffElizabeth Posted August 9, 2019 #26 Share Posted August 9, 2019 Wow, that is a lot of people! I have always wanted to visit there but hate crowds so I don't mind skipping Venice.

We were there in 2016 when small boats blocked us in and delayed our departure for about two hours. Why would you want to visit, when the locals object strongly to the cruise ships sailing in the canal? Venice isn't just about the architecture and the view. It's about the Venetians too. TAD2005 Posted August 9, 2019 #28 Share Posted August 9, 2019 Docking on the mainland and transporting thousands of passengers to Venice will be no easy task. Other ports mentioned above, like Rome and Florence have established mass transit systems in place to carry the thousands of people from the ports to the downtown cities. Venice is a completely different animal. There is only one bridge that takes you from the mainland to Venice. Buses and rail service, but once you arrive in Venice, you still have the problem of moving the masses around, which has to be totally by small watercraft. (water taxis and vaporettos). By Docking in the present locations, you can actually walk to St. Mark's Square and other locations. Not possible when docking on the mainland.

Maybe the ships could treat it as tender port, using their own tenders to get their pax over to the island? Or they could use some large land-based tenders like HMC.
