Car rental from Nahwiliwili

Hey, cruisers!  For those of you who have rented a car while in Kauai, about how long would you say it took from cruise ship to sitting in the car?  I understand we will have to take a shuttle to the airport to pick up the car.  Any input is appreciated!  Thanks!

It's going to be dependent on a number of factors:  Whether you happen to be at the shuttle pick-up point right when the shuttle arrives, or if you've just missed it and need to wait for the next; the number of passengers who've booked rentals on your ship (affecting the line-up at the rental office) ; which rental company you booked and how fast/slow they process you at the rental office.  It's a short distance from port to rental office, but the other factors will be more significant. All that being said, if I remember correctly, it took us maybe 45 minutes?

If you are a member of the loyalty club of the company you are renting from, it could be as fast as 20 minutes. If you aren't a loyalty club and you get there as a flight or two arrives it could be more than an hour, much more actually.

We have done this at various times and it has varied from 20 minutes to an  hour depending on the timing for the shuttle.

The shuttles themselves can be trying at times. They are not particularly large and you will find entire families riding on them thus making the wait even longer.

Would it be easy to Uber from port to the airport? We don’t mind paying a small Uber fee to get there quicker and we are a group of six and don’t want to take up six seats on the shuttle. But we also want to be together and ready to hit the road without circling back.

Just checked Uber estimator.  It says $16.31 for an Uberxl from Nawiliwili Harbor to Lihue Airport

Taxi estimator:  $19.92

Taking Uber is fine, but I'd just send one person. It is literally 5 minutes to the airport. You'll spend more time getting six people in and out of an Uber than just sending one person to get it. See the map here.

Yeah but is it easy for hubby to pick us up at the port? The logistics of getting a car for 6 people is the hardest part of this whole trip.

You won't be able to get back next to the cruise port building, but just ask your passengers to walk the very short (maybe 2 mins) to just outside the gate area where you can pick them up.  Take a look at Google maps for Nawiliwili Harbor  click on street view and you can see exactly where they could wait for you and the car.

You might have to walk to this point (click the hyperlink).

Or if the hubby can show the guard his passenger ID he may get to this point. In any case, it seems easier than getting an Uber for 6.

This is exactly where my DH dropped me off.  Short walk back to the ship.
