CruiseyMcBoatFace Posted August 29, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2019 Hi, all. I'm visiting in October and would love to snorkel with my mother, but she's not able to get in and out of the water on a boat ladder. Wondering if there are beaches that have good walk-in/walk-out access to snorkeling sites. Thanks.
Rare crewsweeper Posted August 29, 2019 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2019 Some folks have snorkeled at Blue Kay in the past. Not an ideal spot but there can be some sea life. The cruise line excursions for power snorkeling and snorkel/beach breaks usually head north oft he port to Uvero Beach. Some iron shore there. Between the shallow water, sandy bottoms and all the sargassum, snorkeling along the malecon or even down at Maya Chan or Almaplena isn't too good and you may not want too. See my post above. With a major sargassum problem throughout the Caribbean this year, beach snorkeling on eastern facing current affected beaches may not be viable. Either take a ship excursion to Uvero or find an offshore boat snorkel tour.

pete1681 Posted September 19, 2019 #6 Share Posted September 19, 2019 You really need a boat to get out to the reef. There are lots of locals that run trips.
Rare mitsugirly Posted September 20, 2019 #7 Share Posted September 20, 2019 While snorkeling from the beach isn't the greatest in CM, I have found that it is somewhat decent from Blue Kay. It is an easy beach entrance (as you stated you needed) and you can swim (and even walk for the most part) out to the rocks and snorkel. There's plenty enough to see (no huge reefs or anything but plenty of coral, fish and the last time we were there everywhere we looked were stingrays). CLICK HERE and you'll see my snorkeling pictures from the day we were there last. Pages 3-6 HERE'S another time we were there. Page 5-6 I hope that helps.
Rare astridwilson Posted November 5, 2019 #8 Share Posted November 5, 2019 How far is Blue Kay from Port? Is it walkable?

It's a short way past the Lighthouse. But if you go out of the cruise port and hang an immediate left and walk a short ways down that street there is (was) a pathway down to the beach between the port and the lighthouse. Just head toward the lighthouse and go past the PEMEX station.

Rare astridwilson Posted November 12, 2019 #13 Share Posted November 12, 2019 Another question: I am going with My Mom who is elderly and my sister. Both do not want to get in the water, just sit and relax for an hour or 2. I want to shore snorkel and swim. Is Blue kay he place we should ask a taxi driver to take us?
