Assuming your son isn't a minor there's no reason you have to board together.  You will each have a boarding pass.

After checking the website every couple of hours during the day and just before I went to bed each night, today was my lucky day! I logged on this morning and FTTF was showing 1 ticket available! I snatched it up, lol, so my problem has been solved.
