cruisen JJ Posted November 30, 2019 #1 Share Posted November 30, 2019 We will be going on the Sky Princess and spending a few days in Berlin before the cruise. Has anyone done the trip to the port on their own. I believe there is both a train and a bus. Is one better than the other? Is it easy to do? Anubi Posted December 7, 2019 #2 Share Posted December 7, 2019 We are doing the same thing and going on the same ship!! We looked at the Princess transfer but it was a bit pricey at $512.00 CDN plus having to get back to the airport to board the bus. So I did some research and found that taking the train from Berlin to Warnemunde was very doable . The cost, return, for both of us is about $120.00 CDN. According to the schedule I found (we aren't booked yet, so times could change) we are planning to leave Berlin at 8:11am and getting into Warnemunde before 11:30am. I've attached my notes. I hope this helps. Train from Berlin to Warnemunde posted.docx
dogs4fun Posted December 7, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 7, 2019 We have also taken the train from Berlin Hbf to the port. Anubi's attachment offers your options. Taking the train is very straight forward, relaxing & much more affordable than the expensive cruise transfers. You board your train at Berlin's main station & get off at Rostock. You change to the S Bahn in Rostock and end in Warnemunde. The Warnemunde station is across the street from the cruise terminal.
dogs4fun Posted December 7, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 7, 2019 (edited) Note: your departing platform in Berlin will be found on the bottom level (tief - means deep). These are the north-south platforms (1-8). So, when you enter Berlin hbf from the street, you will be on level 0. You take the escalator (or lift) down to level 2 where you will find platforms 1 through 8. We departed from platform 6. Here is a link to the station plan, Berlin Hbf: http://berliner-hbf.de/berlin_hbf_plan.html and https://www.bahnhof.de/bahnhof-en/Berlin_Hauptbahnhof-3803194 Edited December 7, 2019 by dogs4fun

dogs4fun Posted December 7, 2019 #6 Share Posted December 7, 2019 There is a better map of the Berlin station here: http://berliner-hbf.de/wp-content/uploads/berlin-hbf-karte-vergrößert.pdf You will depart from 2. Untergeschoss (shown on the station plan) where you see platforms 1 - 8. We find the trains in Germany (and, for that matter, most of Europe) a very pleasant experience. They are easy to use and very comfortable. A bonus is always the price versus cruise transfers.

kristapb Posted December 15, 2019 #8 Share Posted December 15, 2019 You might also consider the Flix bus. We took it summer before last from Berlin to Warnemunde. It was inexpensive, easy, and direct. The bus left us at the train station, which is an easy walk to the cruiseport.
Anubi Posted December 27, 2019 #9 Share Posted December 27, 2019 Just thought I'd let you know that we were able to book our train tickets from Berlin to Warnemunde return this morning. I even managed to find a non-stop train both ways!! We will be in Warnemunde by 10:00am and on the ship shortly afterward. 😀

Starting in late May, 2020, there will be Intercity train service between Warnemunde/Berlin (frequency - every 2 hours). This is much more convenient for cruise ship passengers. Rare fabnfortysomething Posted December 31, 2019 #11 Share Posted December 31, 2019 glad to hear there is now a cruise friendly inter city train 2 years ago we did train from Berlin to Rostock and changed to local train from there to Warnemunde very cheap HOWEVER no reserved seating and although we arrived as one of first at Berlin main train station just before train arrived so did hoards of other passengers who pushed in front of us as we attempted to board train with our luggage we were directly in front of bike compartment which by the glares we were told not to be used by regular passengers getting to seats area involved 2 sets of steps up to top level-very difficult with cases and by time we got up there no seats left we ended up sitting on our cases in luggage area until train cleared out somewhat halfway to coast not a pleasant experience with a disabled husband!
