Weather in New England/canada May/early June

The weather should be lovely. May is late spring so the days will be longer and warmer than April (or winter for that matter). You'll need a jacket or sweater for mid-May which isn't usually "beach" weather.  Bring layers and a light rain coat, and you'll be fine.  In Boston we've occasionally had snow in early May (think May 1 or 2) but it melts quickly and by mid-May we are full into spring flowers.  Late May and June starts summertime.  Sometimes you'll need a light sweater in the evening but the days will be warm tee-shirt weather. Spring is my favorite time of year in New England. You can't go wrong!

The Atlantic is cold so any time spent on the water is going to be chilly. We wear sweatshirts in July on the water (Maine). That being said, you may get some very warm days. Or not. Bring options... t-shirts/shorts, long sleeves/pants, outer layers like sweaters/fleece/jackets... and absolutely you should bring a raincoat and a windbreaker. Even if it doesn't actually rain, the fog could be thick enough it might as well be raining. We have a saying here. If you don't like the weather... wait a minute. 😉 Bring options.
