RUINS: Chaccoben or Kohunlich or Dzibanche (or Xunantunich)??

We want to visit/tour Mayan ruins on upcoming cruise -- maybe during our day in Costa Maya.  We have identified a vendor we want to employ.

Now we need to decide which ruins to visit.  Yes, PICK ONE!!  (and tell us Why!)

The vendor offers a combo I'd love to do (Kohunlich & Dzibanche), but that requires 10 hours in port and our ship doesn't quite give us that (8-5).

(We are two mid-60s adults who love history, biology, geology, anthropology, etc. AND don't mind walking.)

OR -- to put a different spin on it, since we'll be in Belize City the day before we go to Costa Maya, and from there we could do a daytrip to the Xunantunich site, should we just do that instead and find another activity at Costa Maya?

WE have done the Xunantunich ruins in Belize and this past Sept did Lamanai ruins in Belize.  Both were fantastic tours and I highly recommend both of them.  We have also done lots of ruins in Mexico, we are also history buffs and can't pass up something like this.  Belize is great and tours are very informative.  Do them thru the cruise ship though, as you are traveling so far away from the port and you will be crunched for time with either one.

Haven't done the ruins in Costa Maya yet...we've only been there once and just did the beach at Tropicante that time.  Next time there we will do ruins so interested to see what you pick.  Please report back with photos!

We visited Chachobben 3 years ago. A wonderful visit, made all the more so by our tour guide. I second the suggestion about going through your ship's excursion team, even if it costs more. We took a cab across the countryside, whose driver thought he was at the Daytona 500.
