BK512 Posted February 1, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 1, 2020 I want to visit Volcanoes National Park while in Hilo. The cruise pulled the two excursions that visited there by land...they seem to have kept the helicopter tours. Is it feasible to rent a car and visit? Tips on doing so would be helpful. Thanks! Molokai-Chuck Posted February 1, 2020 #3 Share Posted February 1, 2020 (edited) About a 45 min. drive from Hilo....very easy! That way you can stop and stay at an area in the Park as along as you want. Plus, in a car rental is about the only way to get down to the chain of craters road to the sea ... as the major tour buses do not do down for several reasons, one of which is no where to turn around at the end is big enough for them, as well as no parking for them, only cars. Beachiekeen Posted February 1, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 1, 2020 The website has good info on self driving. You can also download the Shaka app. https://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/things2do.htm
AKJonesy Posted February 1, 2020 #5 Share Posted February 1, 2020 (edited) There are a couple of rental car companies near the port in Hilo. Our rental car company happens to be a few blocks from Walmart. I understand there is a shuttle that goes to Walmart from the port, so we plan to use the shuttle to access our rental car outfit. But, there are a few others as well, including the airport, and there is another one a bit closer to the port. Maybe this will help: https://www.google.com/maps/search/car+rentals/@19.7111033,-155.0632829,15z/data=!4m8!2m7!3m6!1scar+rentals!2sPort+of+Hilo,+80+Kuhio+St,+Hilo,+HI+96720!3s0x79524c88b6b6e8bb:0xd628bc0e73176fc0!4m2!1d-155.0537986!2d19.7325145 Also, there is much to see if you have a decent port day.
