Deposit Question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My final payment is due early April. Most likely we will be canceling our cruise as it is a European one. If I do not pay the remainder of my cruise, what happens to my deposit? Will it be applied to a future cruise?  I do not think I could get a refund as it is a nonrefundable fare. What happens to my RCCL OBC?  Will that move over to my next cruise?

Carnival has made the decision to cancel their European cruises up to June 11th,  I wish RCCL would do the same. It is just so sad what is happening to Italy. I do not see how cruise ships will be able to return to those ports anytime within the next few months.

Thank you

These are unusual times. No telling right now.  Depends on if you are in the U.S. and when you sail and if you booked non-refundable. If you're going to cancel before final payment is due, then here is the policy you'll likely fall under:

"Outside of final payment, when a non-refundable deposit cancellation occurs, you will receive a Future Cruise Certificate in the amount of their designated cruise deposit, less a $100 per guest change fee."

If your final payment  is due in April, I assume your cruise is scheduled in the month of July. If so, you can get future cruise credit now so I'm assuming you'd get the deposit in the form of future cruise credit as well. Good question though. Why not give the deposit back. Interesting question about the OBC as well. Our next cruise is scheduled for April 24 and is fully paid and we intend to cancel  but are hoping they cancel it for full refund vs future cruise credit as they are for current cruises through April 11.

Make sure that you call to officially cancel.  There have been reports of people doing nothing then the cruise automatically transfers to a penalty phase and they lost their deposit.

Promotional OBC does not move with the booking.

My cruise is scheduled for early June. RCCL has extended the final payment date until April 7th. I will definitely make sure that I cancel prior to that date so I do not lose my deposit. I believe there is no penalty or change fee at this time. The OBC was not a promotional one, but one from RCCL because of an issue I had. It was a nice gesture on their behalf. I did not ask for it,  but because of what happened they gave it to me.

The other issue is that I already submitted a pretty large GC to be applied to my sailing. My family members gave it to me as a gift.  I hope I do not lose that GC.

Thank you

Based on the "Cruise with Confidence" policy, I would expect you to get your full fare in the form of a future cruise credit:

ROYAL CARIBBEAN GROUP ADOPTS "CRUISE WITH CONFIDENCE" POLICY, ALLOWING CANCELLATIONS UP TO 48 HOURS BEFORE SAILING
MIAMI,March 6, 2020/PRNewswire/ --With COVID-19 adding uncertainty to travel plans around the world, Royal Caribbean Group said it will give guests greater control over their vacation decisions, allowing guests to cancel cruises as late as two days before departure. The"Cruise With Confidence" policy allows guests on Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara and Silversea to cancel up to 48 hours before a sailing. Guests will receive a full credit for their fare, usable on any future sailing of the guest's choice in 2020 or 2021. The policy applies to both new and existing cruise bookings."Our previous policy set earlier deadlines for guests to cancel their cruises, and that added unnecessary stress," saidRichard Fain, the company's chairman and CEO."Trying to guess a month or more in advance where areas of concern about coronavirus might be is challenging for medical experts, much less a family preparing for vacation."When circumstances are as fast-changing as they have been recently, it's good to knowyou have the option to take a rain check," Fain said."We think putting more control in our guests'hands helps them make informed decisions about whether to keep their existing vacation plans or trade out for a more convenient time or itinerary."In addition to easing concerns for booked guests, Fain said the policy would also give consumers more confidence in making new bookings, knowing that they could later adjust their plans without penalty. The policy applies to all cruises with a sailing date on or beforeJuly 31, 2020, and will be offered by the company's global brands: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara and Silversea. They are before final payment.

the cruise with confidence policy only applies if they have a Non refundable deposit in which case they would receive a FCC for the entire deposit amount as the $100pp penalty is waived.

if they have a refundable deposit and they cancel prior to final payment they will get all of their deposit refunded to their credit card.

Sorry. I should have clarified - I do not expect them to have to pay the penalty. Thanks for setting that strait.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you everyone. I was hoping that an announcement would be made today regarding European cruises but they did not. Here is my next question, if they end up canceling my sailing which I will be canceling this week,  will they then issue me my NRD or still hold it for a FCC?

If RCI cancels, you can get a refund or FCC. If you cancel, you only get an FCC. Hope for the former and take the money.
