Western v/s Eastern Caribbean

Recommended Posts

Western: Far superior snorkeling and scuba (Pelicar reef)

Western: Ports less "trampled"

I've never seen a port more trampled than Cozumel.

On our Navigator Eastern cruise last June 4-10 we had San Juan, St Thomas and St Maarten all to ourselves as the only ship in port! Nassau had 3 others I think. Maybe we just lucked out? It all depends on who you would rather have trying to sell hairbraids and trinkets to you while you sun on the beach.

I loved Western, the little shops and waterfalls in Jamaica, the stingrays at Grand Cayman, not to mention "Hell" and the turtle farm. Mexico was ok, but then we were there only for a bit and I was down with a fever. My Eastern favourites were San Juan (highly recommend a self-guided tour and going to see the fortification walls). I did find the eastern islands of St. Maarten and St. Thomas a bit boring, this time I'm making sure that I book some interesting excursions. It's hard to complain when one is in the warm Caribbean when it's snowing at home, though. I could skip Tortola, although it's quite nice and I could definitely skip Antigua. :p
