The itinerary was spectacular, and the weather was perfect. The Joy was a beautiful ship, too. We really got it in under the wire. My wife's family is near LA, so we visited them at the conclusion of the cruise, and arrived home just days before the lockdowns went into effect. In retrospect—wow, did we got lucky. The virus was already circulating by then. It was a nearer miss than we knew at the time. As a cruise it will be very difficult to match, just perfect 🤩
WYB! Posted February 15, 2021 #27 Share Posted February 15, 2021 (edited) January 26th, 2020 I was also sailing on the NCL Gem on a 42 day voyage from NY-SF-NY and docked in Los Angeles that day. I had rented a car and was driving across LA to have lunch with relatives. I took a picture while driving in downtown LA on the highway about 3 miles from the staples center. - WYB 10:14AM PST Jan 26th, 2020Near the Staples center on the CA-110 heading north near Exit 22 Edited February 15, 2021 by WYB! cuterlmt Posted February 15, 2021 #28 Share Posted February 15, 2021 Our last cruise was on the Epic as well, from Puerto Rico, 3/1/2020 to 3/8/2020. I hadn't heard much about Corona virus. We had a fabulous cruise and saw places we had never been, did some great excursions, the weather was great! We had sailed on the Epic before, and enjoyed it again. We returned home the same day the ship came back to port. I went right back to work and was put on an unexpected 14 day quarantine from work within three hours of walking in the door to work..... Since then, we've had 4 cruises cancelled, all which we have rescheduled. Unfortunately two of them are for Alaska late this year, which will likely be cancelled. These are all CAS cruises so we have to reschedule within 30 days of cancellation or lose the benefit of the CAS (which is a paid for cruise, except for an admin fee and port fees and taxes!), so we have rescheduled each one. The wonderful thing to me is that we always have something to look forward - although we haven't received any new cruise certificates since last March because our local casinos have been closed for a good part of the last year, we have two cruises set this year and two next year. Hopefully we'll get some more cruise certificates before we finish all of those cruises.

I had been reading about the virus in January and on Jan 31 (when you could still get them) ordered a box of R95 masks and sanitizer wipes to take on the cruise. Used the wipes when we got into our room. Never used the masks. There was one guy on our Southwest Airlines flight who had on a mask, and no one would sit on the same row with him - I remember joking about how that was a great way to get a whole row to yourself. LOL I recall posting in the Roll Call on February 26 that a second cruise ship had been denied port entry in Jamaica and Grand Cayman, and being a little worried that our cruise would run into issues. We ended up with no issues, no one on board seemed concerned, and no one posted in the Roll Call thread after returning about getting the virus. When we returned on 03/08 friends were amazed we still went on the cruise. I think the following week's Epic Southern Caribbean cruise (03/08-03/15) was the last one before shutdown. As long as you have cruised under CAS and are in their system, you don't need cruise certificates from your local casino. Just call CAS direct. They'll be more than happy to offer you "free" cabins or a percentage off depending on your past play.

I don't know if that's true - if we would get the same offer we would have received from the casino. When we have not been available for the "party" to get our cruise certificate, we have not been able to pick up our letter offer at a different time, except for one of the casinos we go to. The other two would not allow it. I guess I will try with CAS next time we have to miss and see if they will go ahead and let us book what we were offered. (The times we have missed events, we have been on cruises so not a bad reason we miss the party!) And I don't want a percentage off - I want the "free" cruise.
