Upgrading cabins last minute??

Since most cruises are going out completely full, the chances are pretty small of a last minute upgrade. Also, most cruise lines now do not give away free upgrades, but charge you the full difference between what you paid for your cabin and what the new cabin costs. It's called an upsell rather than a upgrade.

Princess does not sell upgrades at the pier. RCI does, however, and sometimes early arrivals can get a nice upgrade for minimal money. If Princess has any open full suites they randomly upgrade pasengers, but this is usually a cascading effect and several rooms will get upgraded, each into the next higher category that was just emptied.

If you want to purchase an upgrade, it generally will be at the full difference in cost.

In 2001, we were given a complimentary upgrade at check-in, from and outside cabin to a verandah cabin! :D

Since then, we have paid for upgrades, albeit at discounted rates, 2 or 3 times.

All our cruises have been on HAL and our general experience has been that while complimentary upgrades can and do happen, I think it is more likely to happen if you are a relatively new HAL cruiser or if you have booked a guarantee cabin category. Even then, it is largely an unpredictable event!
