We are traveling to SA in June. We were on BA through LHR both ways. The LHR website stated transit through LHR from SA was allowed as long as the travelers didn’t leave the terminal. A couple of weeks ago BA cancelled our flights to and from SA. So LHR transit was a moot point. We switched to Qatar.

South Africa is on the red list; what happens if you are flying to USA from South Africa via Heathrow; any problems?

Probably best to keep an eye on the following page on the LHR website, which gives advice on passengers transiting from a red list country:

https://www.heathrow.com/customer-support/faq/coronavirus-covid-19

At the moment it says that passengers transiting via the UK do not have to quarantine if they do not pass immigration but do need a negative COVID-19 test  .................. but things change from week to week during these volatile times.
