Expiring Future Cruise/Onboard Credit

We have FCC and OBC credits that will start expiring in the next few days. We have applied them to cruises scheduled for January 2022. We plan to cancel the cruises if there are burdensome COVID-related restrictions in place at the time. We may end up canceling after making final payment, using HAL's Cruise Protection Plan to ease the pain of late cancellation.

Does anybody have experience with whether HAL actually holds firm to the expiration date of these credits?
