MikeNKim Posted May 11, 2021 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2021 Good morning all. we are considering going to Croatia and Montenegro after our cruise that debarks in Rome. We figure we will fly from Rome to Dubrovnik, rent a car and drive to Montenegro spending maybe a day or two in each place. Has anyone done that or something similar? Looks like it would be a nice drive along the coast but just wondering if this is crazy or very doable? thank you kim
iancal Posted May 11, 2021 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2021 (edited) No. But we used the Jhardelina(sp) ferry service to work our way down the coast from Split to Dubrovnik.. We rented cars at various locations . In Dubrovnik did two one day rentals. Once to visit Montenegro and Kotor and the second time to visit Bosnia. No issues whatsoever. Roads were fine, drivers fine. Just be aware that you now need an International Drivers Lic. to rent a car in EU countries. Most are standard transmission. You will will have to park it outside the gates and parking can be expensive. We stayed inside the city for four days. We rented for two seperate days, picking up and returning our rental to the Sixt car rental booth inside the Hilton Hotel (may have changed by now) just outside the main city gate. There are of course many places to stay outside the city gate that may provide parking priviledges. Edited May 11, 2021 by iancal
Ride-The-Waves Posted May 19, 2021 #4 Share Posted May 19, 2021 Have driven the "coast road" between Rijeka and Bar many times. Its is truly beautiful and a wonderful experience. Summer months can be a challenge as many tourists from north and central Europe are on the roads. Speeds are relatively slow. Posted limits more pertinent to wet roads - stay at or under the limits to avoid spinning out. Watch out for the FKK beaches!
