Wednesday morning a fire broke out on the Viva Inspire while sailing near Kaub on the Rhine. It was confined to the engine room and no passengers of the 90 on board were hurt. Three crew members suffered smoke poisoning, two were taken to hospital for treatment.

The fire was extinguished by the local fire brigade but broke out again during the afternoon. The fire brigade was on the scene again. The cause for neither of the two fires has been established yet.

A bad start to the season for the ship. She is only on her first or second itinerary.

I hope the crew members recover fast.

According to a German website with a statement from Viva Cruises, the passengers have been transferred to a ship in Traben-Trarbach that is currently moored there as a swimming hotel. The Viva Inspire is not fit for sailing. The following sailings will be done by the MS Grace.

Regional news tonight says the damage is estimated to be 1 million euros.
