Types of Shipboard Credit - Refundable and Non-refundable

In my cruise details, I have two types of shipboard credit. For example:

  • Shipboard credit 50 USD included -  Jane Doe
  • Shipboard Credit 100 USD - Non Refundable included - Jane Doe

Can I assume the $50 is Refundable?  Do they automatically use Non-Refundable first for Daily Service Charges and then Refund any refundable balance left?  Or do you have to instruct Guest Services to do it that way ?

With MSC, it could be either way. I have learned not to assume anything with them. 🙄

We have same situation.  I will ask that non refundable be used first but, not counting on them to do it correctly.
May have to check back after a couple of days.

I'm going to make it simple for them.  I will use my OBC ( both types) to upgrade my drink package once onboard 😉

I was the OP and our cruise is getting close.  We have accumulated several line items of OBC for the cruise.  Only one line item says Non-refundable OBC.  We had an itinerary change and the letter we received said they would issue Non-refundable OBC, but it doesn't indicate that on the cruise details.

Since cruising restarted in US a few months ago, does anyone have updates on whether the refundable gets refunded to your credit card automatically, or do you have to request it?  Can you believe the notations of non-refundable and assume the rest is refundable?

Hi! I have the same situation. Is there a way to get money charged to your room account at the casino? I would love to get $150 charged to my room to wipe out the OBC. Thanks, Ted

We had $500 OBC for week 1 of cruise and $400 OBC for week 2 of cruise.

DSC was applied to OBC ( I asked for entire week of DSC to be charged at once).

Remainder  included about  $12.00 more than we thought. I guess port fees for itinerary change got credited to account.

All  was posted NONrefundable.

I went to casino and charged $100 to room . Played penny slot (15c bets) until I lost a dollar. Then hit cash out and voucher is printed . Went to Cashier and got the cash.
Did this a few times for each week.
I kept voucher and cashed it next day, to look less obvious.
Used cash for tips onboard.

Was going to use some for excursions booked on board. Every excursion we booked got cancelled the night before that port.

The process for casino.

Insert cruise card into slot machine. Machine has selections, upper left for Charge to Room.

hit that then asks for amount. It verifies your account by having you enter month and year of birthdate.

Then asks you for 4 number PIN, repeat to confirm.

Remove cruise card and slot machine  shows total points.
Play as much as you want then cash out.
Take printed voucher to cashier.

Remember, Casino is only open when at sea.

Thanks, Phissy! This is perfect.  We have $500 total, and only $200 is designated as Non-refundable.  What we got for the Labor Day Promotion was the Non-refundable.  All other OBC  was for the Voyagers Selection and change of port.  Did yours say Non-refundable on the Cruise Details before you sailed?

Just a warning--what you are told pre-cruise by MSC customer service as what is refundable credit is not necessarily what you will find once onboard. We had made a change in our booking after final payment that resulted in a credit balance which was added to our OBC, supposedly as refundable. However, once onboard we were informed that none of our credits were refundable and if we didn't use them we'd lose the money. I tried to explain that I was told the one credit was refundable but they insisted that none were.  Just because it doesn't say non-refundable in the cruise details doesn't guarantee that you can have it refunded. If this happens again I may try the casino process although I seldom go to the casino.

Ours were listed as both before cruise.

However, when on board, our account said credit balance non refundable.

Ours were from promos and Voyagers Club also.

Fortunately, MSC will apply credit to DSC.
As I have mentioned, tried to use OBC for excursions booked on board but they all got cancelled.

we do not gamble so, the only time we spent at casino was to “cash out” OBC.

when I got down to $16 something credit in account,  I selected $20 on machine.
So, end balance on room account was $4 something charged on card.

Someone on our cruise, loud self-promoter, claimed to have won $1,200 on slots in 20 minutes.  Color me incredulous.

Only 3 or 4 were at casino, playing slots when I went each evening .
Have a great cruise.

Thank you , yes much better.

Return flight was 9.5 hours , with connection.  Glad, same gate and same metal for connection.

As with most trips, good to be home.

Happy Holidays to you.

We got $50 OBC says (non-refundable) and because paid in full by final due date got credited 5+15% as OBC but doesn’t say refundable or non-refundable but I’m sure we will use it to upgrade drink package from Easy Plus to Premium Plus which I think is $20 a day pp? Not sure if it would be cheaper once you board and they beat you up on your way on ship to upgrade? What ever is left sounds like we’d like to use in the casino. So we just charge to room and they automatically take it out of all our OBC?

Just curious on all the questions above. Appreciate the help in advance..

Depends on what ship you are on and when.

Premium Plus is not longer available on Winter Drink Packages.

You could go to Premium Extra.

OBC can also cover your daily service charge.

All charges to room come out of on board account.

Ok after reading from November on the packages are as follows!

  1. Easy Package
  2. Easy Plus Package (was called Premium)
  3. Premium Extra Package (was called Premium Plus)
  4. Alcohol-Free Package (was called Non-Alcoholic)
  5. Minors Package (was called Non-Alcoholic Child)
  6. This answers my own question except for should I book now or wait till I get on the ship for a deal?

OP here.  As someone previously said, once onboard, all OBC we had was labeled Non-refundable.  Those were from Labor Day Promo, changed port and Voyager Club OBCs.  We ended up using the casino trick to wipe them out in exchange for cash.

Hello,

Do you recall on what day your OBC was posted to your account?

We have several OBC showing on our paperwork, and I will want to make sure it is credited before we spend it.

We will be on Seashore.

Thanks!

Yes, I think it was about the 3rd day.  Don't ask guest services, they'll either tell you what they see so far, or tell you it'll take 5 days.  I was on a FB group and they started seeing it on the 3rd day. I could only see it accurately on the TV in the cabin.  My app wouldn't show it because I was logged in under my name, and the OBC was all showing up only on my husband's profile, even though we each had several OBC entries.  My husband couldn't see it on his app because the internet from the All-in pkg was under my name.

Thank you. This detail is helpful.  I will look on the TV under both our names.

It's hard to find it on the TV at first, but go under MSC for me, pick the person, the scroll over to Profile.  Then go into Payment/Billings, something like that.
