IB2 Posted November 22, 2021 #1 Share Posted November 22, 2021 I see the Discovery’s scheduled 1800 sailing from Southampton was twice delayed and this morning she’s still at dock. Anyone know what the problem is?
turnip eater Posted November 22, 2021 #2 Share Posted November 22, 2021 Ma,jor problem with port Azipod. unable to sail until rectified or there is a ‘go around’ Saga Senior technical bods present. Saga in touch with manufacturers.😳 Update at noon🙂 sorry must go for breakfast.😋
IB2 Posted November 22, 2021 Author #3 Share Posted November 22, 2021 Thanks for the update. Bad news for the cruisers (including my 90-year old mother), but I guess they'll be in line for considerable compensation if their Canaries cruise is severely curtailed, and it is at least a lovely sunny, if cold, day in Southampton today. turnip eater Posted November 22, 2021 #4 Share Posted November 22, 2021 I wish we could get off, but I understand the reasons why we can’t. On another note. Yesterday there were a group of people corralled in the terminal. Apparently, they didn’t gave the correct COVID details and Saga was trying ‘to them out’….oh dear! LandC Posted November 22, 2021 #5 Share Posted November 22, 2021 Sorry to hear your cruise is delayed. Hopefully SoD will be repaired and you can get underway today and make up some time on your way to Funchal. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for you! nosapphire Posted November 23, 2021 #11 Share Posted November 23, 2021 So she is ... must have found a bigger hammer. Better news for all on board - a good chance that the itinerary will not be too disrupted (the schedule always has some leeway for arrivals in case of the unexpected). nosapphire Posted November 23, 2021 #12 Share Posted November 23, 2021 Making good speed according to the Marine Traffic website - 17.2kn in the Channel, ETA Funchal 07:00 27th (so expected 2 days late) - but may make up some time en route once out of the Channel. turnip eater Posted November 24, 2021 #16 Share Posted November 24, 2021 Now in the Bay of Biscay. Still have the Siemens people and their luggage on board! They arrivejustd before 11:00am yesterday and we were off as soon as they were on board.😄 we are due in Madeira on Saturday, 2 days late. We won’t be overnighting in Tenerife and we’ll miss La Palma(no surprise there), then all other islands as arranged plus Lisbon.. plus 3 days refund from Saga. we are now on our cruise at last 🍹
LandC Posted November 24, 2021 #17 Share Posted November 24, 2021 Glad you are now underway turnip eater, and the compensation sounds very fair. It’s good to know that the Siemens engineers are still on board, just in case!
turnip eater Posted November 24, 2021 #18 Share Posted November 24, 2021 Yes, we were wondering if we would have to leave the ship in Southampton, but there was a sigh of relief when the ‘fast boat’ ( think Pilot boat) arrived with the Siemens bods and their suitcases! Plans were changing all the time….there was talk of a pit stop in Northern France or Northern Spain to pick up the Siemens people, but luckily they joined in the Solent. They won’t be leaving us until Madeira or of course they could stay will us for the full trip. The crew have been taking great care of us. Impressed by Saga on board. nosapphire Posted November 24, 2021 #19 Share Posted November 24, 2021 Glad to hear you are under way with most of the itinerary intact. I hope Saga (or HSBC) managed to get the warranty period extended - although they will have been testing the ship as much as possible during the lockdown, it is only in real life use that the snags are discovered - and Saga had their initial real-life testing unexpectedly cut short by world circumstances. And with the increase in technology comes the increase in "oops - that shouldn't happen" moments. We had technicians (mainly electrical) on board from the manufacturers during the whole cruise - they were a bit grumpy when they too had to get off in order to clear USA customs along with the passengers, but were quite a jolly bunch apart from that, spent most of their time up ladders with their head through a hatch.. turnip eater Posted November 24, 2021 #20 Share Posted November 24, 2021 Captain said today that the Azipods are still under warranty. He was in the theatre this morning telling us about himself etc. Then there was a question and answer session. Ship is bouncing about a little, but it will be a little more active overnight. off to art class.🎨 soon
turnip eater Posted December 1, 2021 #21 Share Posted December 1, 2021 We’ll, we’re on our way back. Tomorrow is Lisbon and Captain Kim has announced he is cutting back our time there and we depart at 13:00 in order to miss the 30’ waves brewing in the northern area of the Bay of Biscay. Oh Joy😳 we’ve all had a lateral flow test today prior to docking in Lisbon 😳 we will be receiving our PCR test ‘equipment’ later this week, or as our room attendant calls it ‘the spitter’.😧.This all arranged by Saga, collected by the room attendant and given to the medical team to deal with. So grateful that Saga organises all of this and hopefully saves us time when we get home🙂
turnip eater Posted December 1, 2021 #22 Share Posted December 1, 2021 To add, I believe the Siemens engineers are still on board and check the iffy Azipod after every docking.
