Pompeii from Positano

Recommended Posts

The cruise we're going on [Oceania Nautica 7/14 Istanbul-Venice] has a port call in Positano for a day. Is it feasible to get to Pompeii from there? Oceania doesn't list it as an excursion. Are theree recommended tour operators from Positano? Any insight will be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

We are actually on the Oceania Insignia, and we have booked tours with www.aptours.it of Sorrento, we have two days :) (Amalfi then sail to Sorrento), from Amalfi we have booked a half day tour to Pompeii, it is only about an hour away, so the trip should take 4 hours, giving us 2 hours within the archaeological site.

We opted for the official guide so we can get the most out of our visit.

Positano is even closer than Amalfi, so l am sure you will have no problem.

We also go to Livorno and they have put us in touch with an English driver there.

We are sailing from Rome, and will be in Amalfi on the 23rd April.

If you are in Positano for a day, relax and stay in Positano. IT is a magnificent place to spend the day climbing the stairway-streets, checking out the boutiques (the town is famous for its summer leisure wear, sandles that Jackie Kennedy loved) . There are some rocky beach clubs, fantastic 5 star hotels where you can ooh and aah over the decor, the dining, the bars. Check out the ceramics places there and in nearby Vietri , a famous center of ceramics production. The furthest I would go is to Amalfi or maybe Ravello high on the mountainside.

Wow. Its rare for a cruise ship to use Positano as a port. We love this little cliff town and the entire Amalfi coast. If you really have your heart set on Pompeii, than so be it! However, it is a good 1 1/2 hour drive each way..and this depends on traffic, road construction, etc. The problem is that there is no major road to Positano (its on the famous Amalfi Drive). I doubt if you will find a real tour operator in Positano, but you should be able to hire somebody from Sorrento or Amalfi and arrange to have them meet you at the pier. Positano is a very small village and you cannot count on a taxi...so best to pre-arrange.

Thanks for the help - Pompeii is too close to pass up - some day we'll do a Southern Italy land trip where we'll 'soak up' the Amalfi coast and see the Blue Grotto and all.

Pompeii is a zooooooo......;) and it is not that close. It is a long winding road over the Amalfi Coast to get there and back.

It used to be a fun place to wander around, but not anymore. Every single bus in Italy goes to Pompeii and there are hundreds of them at any given time. There are so many tour groups, you have to wait in line to see things. The entry is a zoo, thousands of people waiting to move through the ruins in large groups.

We have been to both places recently and I would forgo the long winding road to get to Pompeii and back and the mob at Pompeii and relax and enjoy the area around Positano.....:)
