Flying through Canada/YYZ

Currently considering several options for flying to Europe next Fall for a cruise. Via United the option of utilizing Air Canada flight, for a BC class ticket, can save us $1K each. A chunk of change!

We have flown Air Canada on European routes before. That is not the question. Has anyone flown these routes, from the States, recently and can discuss any hoops the Canadians put you through just to transit their country?

We have friends that own property in Cape Breton and they went through a world of hoops to visit their property this summer. With a six hour layover in Toronto, I’m not seeing much difference in protocols just to transit.

Anyone have recent experience on this issue?
