Straw question

I bring a good supply of straws made from corn that are compostable.  They dissolve in water so if they get into the ocean, no harm done.  I just bring them in a ziplock and stash a few in my purse each day. No big deal really and I don't have to deal with paper or candy straws.

the sugar straws don't work for me at all!!!   I eat them before I finish my drink.  🙂

They are made of sugar and bovine gelatin - ugh!

Got it thanks!!  Cute idea but I can see how logistically it can be a mess.....

Note to self---bring my own straws....

Definitely bring your own. This candy straws are awful. I bought silicone straws that came with a small cleaning brush in a tiny carry case  at the dollar store. Worked out well for us.

Stop it!!   On the ship go shopping and they'll give you a plastic bag.  Go eat and you'll get a plastic knife, a plastic fork and a plastic spoon all wrapped in plastic.  Throw you trash into a can lined with plastic!!!   Yet it's the plastic straw that will ruin the ocean!!!

Actually, the shopping bags are paper and they have very reasonably priced reusable shopping bags. Are you really that passionate about plastic straws that you need to use the whataboutism argument?

I wouldn't call it passionate.   I always use straws, especially in BBC's.   It's as much a stirrer as a straw for me.   Do you really think that plastic drinking straws are killing the planet???

I think that there is nothing wrong with everyone doing what they can to avoid plastics and single use items.  I also think that there is something to say for saving some punctuation for other people too. Maybe you should consider redirecting your energy into doing your part to save the planet rather than getting so excited about how you aren't.

I’ll have to look for those. I got silicone straws from Amazon that sound exactly the same. I love them! Got them for four of us when we went to Disney a few years ago. Do yours have a carabiner? My boys liked that they could just hook them on to a belt buckle. My daughter is going on a cruise with me in Feb and she doesn’t have one yet. 🙂🙂

I'm sure I'm the only diabetic who ever cruises, so sugar straws are pretty much a no-go for me anyway.*

* of course I'm not the only diabetic on board, but it sure seems that way when they offer sugar straws, and also have NO sugar-free daiquiri mix on board...despite John Heald's personal promise to me  that they'd have some  😞

I don't love the sugar straws *except* in Pina colada.  For some reason it makes it better for me (maybe it just prolongs the drink as I wait for the next in the casino?). I travel with the silicone straws and have no issues.  They are foldable and bendy and I'm not afraid of chipping a tooth like with the metal ones.  If the metal ones are your jam, I'd suggest the silicone tips 🙂

When we sailed on the Dream in August they only had the sugar straws. Completely ridiculous and impractical. They really don’t work the way a straw should work. You can’t stir with it and they melt pretty quickly. I did my survey after cruising and had two major complaints. No plastic straws and no Diet Coke for the dw.

Carnival should not be bowing to the 5% of the people in this world that cry about the environment. The majority of people either are completely against it or don’t care either way. And if carnival is trying to lessen its carbon”footprint “ I’m sure they can find better ways than to aggravate the majority of its customers.

I do have a question. If you pack plastic straws will they confiscate them?  Like they do with alcohol or steamers.

Yes I realize not of the utmost importance, but at least its not another covid/test thread...lol....

So I "think" I recall reading here (though I will admit it was maybe elsewhere) that Carnival has replaced those horrible flimsy paper straws with some sort of candy (???) straws????  If I recall correctly can someone, please advise more on that.....I am a candy fan but still seems odd.... especially depending on the drink type...

If I am completely wrong LOL....does Carnival use those flimsy paper straws?  I hate those in pool cocktails.....never make it till the end for me...

TIA......

Yes you will be served drinks with the candy "limp" straws !  🍹   We just pack some to get us by .

Huh. My family of four was on the Valor last month and we all loved the candy straws. They were tasty and did the job just fine. They stirred the drinks and worked perfectly well as straws. We never had any go limp or whatever. And we liked trying all the different flavor combinations.

I guess we're in the minority on this one.

Calling Nixon's ghost. Nixon, you were wrong. The Cuyahoga River should still be burning today, screw the '5%.' Next up, lets work on getting the Nueces River to burn.

I kid.

The environment should be protected. Ironic that every last person on here, though, loves taking vacations on giant pollution ships of excess. Many of us reach them by flying to them, which isn't very environmentally friendly, either.

Sugar straws are gross. Easy solution though. Drink gin. Neat.

No. You can also bring your own plastic tray.

I believe getting rid of some plastics was a concession Carnival made for one of the environmental suits.

It is amazing how today's world can't do what we could do 100 years ago. Up until the 1960s everyone used paper straws, or more accurately manila paper coated with paraffin wax. They worked great. I'm old enough to remember them well; I drank many a milkshake through them.

I found 2 packs of metal straws at our 99 only store.  2 straws, 1 straight, 1 bent and a cleaner, with (get this) a plastic brush at the end, all wrapped up in a plastic overwrap, covered in a plastic clamshell.

I'll bring extras with me for those that can't stand the candy/paper straws.

And I also remember the paper straws coated in wax.  I chewed on them after my drink was done.
