Where to stay in St. Thomas?

We're doing the 7 Jan 07 RT from St. Thomas and plan to fly in three nights early. Does anyone have recommendations for where to stay? Couldn't find much specific info on the ports thread (seemed more focused on excursions and things to do -- not where to stay). We've stayed at Frenchman's Reef before and could do so again, but would rather try something different. Anyone stay in the heart of town?

Thanks!

Hi Vandrefalk:

Last March we stayed in the Holiday Inn, Charlotte Amalie before and after. Before was a non descript room, a little down at the cuffs. The room at the end of the cruise was a corner suite, very nice, beautiful view of the harbor. This is very close to shopping, etc. Restaurant was good, bar by the pool nice and the price reasonable. Would stay there again but would make sure of the room category. Cab to Havensight was approx. 10 minutes.

Jim.

With 3 days, I think I'd skip St. Thomas and spend the time on St. John. Caneel Bay is a great place, and there is also the Weston. The beaches on St. John are the best, and it's very easy to get around with those open air "taxi-bus-things".

If you feel you need to shop back in St. Thomas, it's just a 45 minute ferry ride back.

I have to agree with Sea Hawk. I would take the water taxi straight to St. John. Especially if you are going to spend three nights there. It is definitely worth the easy boat ride. On your way back, make sure you take the water taxi that drops you off where SD is docked. There are two different piers and on opposite sides. If you can find out the morning of your embarkation which pier SD is docked, it will make your life much easier.

Caneel and Westin are both excellent choices.

We have stayed at Marriott's MorningStar Beach (which is part of the Marriott Frenchman's Reef complex) the last two years while sailing SD. The MorningStar part of the complex is right on the beach. It's a Marriott ... mind you a Caribbean version but it suits our needs just fine.

We like to stay at Hotel 1829 which is just up the hill from downtown. It is quite a charming place. It has very little activity..we eat next door at Herve''s which is divine. We ask for a 'front balcony' room so we can sit and watch all the port activity. You are only a short walk from all the shops.
