It's not just about where the company is registered for the sake of convenience. That's just one aspect of it. One also has to consider where the mind and management of the company is situated to determine its true location.

So what is the convenience of registering elsewhere?

Seems like the passenger act is more of an inconvenience.

#1 reason.... avoiding taxes.

None of the big 3 pay taxes to the IRS on the billions they bring in.

There are tax rules and tax treaties specifically dealing with non US corporations and shareholders. To simply assume non US taxpayers don't have to pay US tax is a myth and untrue.

So you are saying the big 3 pay taxes to the IRS?

I was always under the assumption the only monies outlayed by cruise lines is to the country of registry that has a deal in place not  to tax ships that is also approved by the IRS.

If I am wrong, I apologize.

Taxation and protection from legal liabilities in US are two total different animals. There are now discussions of implementing a 15%  minimum tax worldwide regardless of where a company is registered. If adopted, the registration location may become a moot point in he near future.

not sure how the total tax structure of billion dollar companies work but in the share holder documents I got from RCL last year it noted they paid over 100 million in taxes/port fees to the US.
