Messina/Taormina on a Sunday

We will be in Messina (the birthplace of my grandfather) on a Sunday, from 8am to 5pm.  I was thinking of doing a Taormina on our own excursion with NCL and then coming back to Messina to walk around a bit before we get back on the ship.

 

My issue is that we will be there on a Sunday and I know from past visits to Italy that places may be closed.  Will I be able to see and do things in Taormina?  Not really concerned with Messina as I was just planning on strolling.  Any suggestions for that?

We were in Messina 2018 on a Sunday and did the ship excursion Taormina On Your Own. It basically provided coach transport to and from Taormina. Everything was open and it was a beautiful little town to stroll around. Messina on the other hand is rubbish, I'd recommend you take the trip.

I'm pretty sure that you'll find Taormina is the same on Sunday as any other day of the week. Unless you'd be getting there super early in the morning.

Yes, Taormina is a resort town (like Sorrento).  By the time you get there everything will be up and running.
