Does the advice of Newbies hold water?

I'm starting to think that with all the madness on the boards as of late that unless you have say 1,000 posts, you can't be trusted. Do you feel me?

I find that with both seasoned and new posters you need to sift out what's relevant and what's not. Whether they've posted 1 or 1000 posts - you can get interesting and informative posts (or the opposite.)

Congrats on the 1,000:). I'd be careful about discounting info from newbies...some people finding this board may have a hell of a lot more cruises under their belt than you or me :D

Susan is absolutely correct, you have to sift out whats relevant. Everyone looks at things differently and has different interests. Food, shows, casino, shore excursions all appeal to different people in different ways.

 

Also, I have listed a little over 900 posts but have well over 12000 on these boards in the last ten years. How do you account for that.

I wonder if you mean that it's hard to break into the conversation at all if you're a newbie? As I definitely fit that category I think I feel you. I didn't post to offer advice, rather to ask questions, and it seems that there are not many willing to answer. What do you think? Is there a "cool" post-er club?

IF SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING WRONG 1000 TIMES, DOES THAT MAKE THEM AN EXPERT?

 

Or the guy with 20 years experience in the same job. Or is it one year's experience, 20 times.

 

I do believe the poster was having some fun withh others just waiting inthe wings to tromp all over his/her good feelings about posting #1000.

I think it's just that some long time posters have formed bonds with each other and it's only natural if they've been 'together' for a long time .... ( I don't fit into any 'clubs', which is OK as I'm all over the boards... Celebrity, Roll Calls, Europe.) I often post something in a current thread and don't get a response.... other times I do. If you start a thread, ususally you'll get quite a bit of feedback.... so stay active on CC :)

DMarch - I only have 300 posts but I've been on 44 cruises. Feel free to discount my posts; it won't hurt my feelings. But I know a thing or 2 about cruising. ;)

 

My rule of thumb is I try to avoid subjective posting - (is this cabin better than that cabin?) - I just don't think there's an effective way to address those types of questions. So I try to stick with the fact based posts.

Sometimes people's questions don't get answered because they are lost in a maze of "extra curricular" topics that veer off from the original poster's question.

 

If that happens, just start a new thread with the exact question you need to have answered and you'll probably get responses.

Betty, Welcome to the X board and ask away! There are some who spend a lot more time here than others and things do get lost in all the new posts daily or in the midst of hijacked posts which can be intimidating for newbies. Just keep asking and you'll get your answers! This really is a great group of people including some slightly off centered and you'll love them once you get to know them. If I see you, I will try to answer if I can along with many others who may have more knowledge.

I don't think so what-so-ever. I just found out about these boards not even a year ago. I am not on here all the time either, but am very knowledgable of each and every cruise ship on any line and the industry itself. Am going on my 18th cruise for my 25th birthday gift to myself, hehehe. I think each and every person has alot to offer the boards. On my most recent cruise i brought my 7 year-old niece. Having already been on the particular ship i was on, did'nt think it would be much different. Boy was i wrong! Seeing everything through a 7 year-olds eyes, was like i had never been on the ship! CC being a community is just that, everyone is a helpful part!

Anyway, if you have 1000 post I think it just means you spend way to sitting in front of the computer. :)

 

Anyway, I think the OP was joking, but I'll put my thoughts in on the subject of newbies and oldies.

 

If a newbie post a single rant about how awful their cruise was and the reasons seem unbelievable or rediculous then I don't take it very seriously.

 

OTH, if a newbie comes on because they just found the sight and posts a thoughtful review, then I find their input just as valid as someone who has 15K plus posts.

Firstly, i am a relative newby to the boards, though most of the time i dont post because i simply feel someone may be able to answer a question better. However, as someone who has been on most of the cruise lines and who works as a cruise consultant now for a cruise line and previosly for a large firm of TA's as a cruise specialist i would hop i have at least a "little" knowledge.

But most posts are very subjective in there information. For example, I detest with a passion ANY organised games such as bingo and would never give a favourable review of such things, my wife, is very shy and would consider more than a dozen people round the pool to be far too many and would say the area was far too busy. But most people would think it was empty?

on Cruise Critic does not mean more knowledgeble than Newbies. The Newbie may have way more cruises under their belt but are only recent to this site. Take each post on its face value. Slamming and/or baiting notwithstanding. Cruise Critic is a great vehicle for all cruiser types. Let's continue on that vein. I have gotten a wealth of knowledge from this site and am grateful to those who thouht it up and monitor it. Keep up the good work.
