Cell phone service in port

Dumb question, but how is cell phone service in most ports? (Verizon, live in US, if that matters...).

Yes, I can live for a few days without the phone so I don't need to pay onboard, but it would be nice to be able to check in every so often.

Cell service in Alaska ports will be intermittent for the first half hour in port because all of the passengers will be taking their phones off of airplane mode and attempting to connect to the same port cell tower.  As passengers move away from the ship, phone service will improve significantly as other cell towers come into play.
